Aliann Pompey Inducted to Capital Region Track Hall of Fame

Olympian one of 18 in inaugural class
St. John's cross country and track and field coach Aliann Pompey was honored on Saturday at the Red Lion Inn in Colonie, N.Y.
"It was a tremendous gesture to be honored this way," Pompey said. "It's where I got started in the sport and I'm in the area quite a lot still. So it felt a bit like a homecoming."
Pompey was one of 18 in the inaugural class inducted featuring six Olympians and four NCAA champions. The Georgetown, Guyana, native is a four-time Olympian for Guyana and is a five-time Athlete of the Year in Guyana.
The event included a banquet and induction ceremony and represented the best athletes from Capital Region track and field and cross country.
"I am in amazing company. My fellow inductees are so accomplished and renowned," Pompey said, "I can't help but be humbled.
Pompey was the NCAA indoor champion in the 400 meters at her alma mater of Manhattan College and in 2009 was named to the Manhattan College Hall of Fame. She began at St. John's as an assistant coach in 2014.
"It didn't escape me that as a coach now I've come full circle," Pompey said. "This is what I want for the athletes I coach now."
