St. John’s Prepares for NCAA East Regional in Lexington

Trio of Johnnies will compete to punch their ticket to the NCAA National Championship in Eugene, Ore.
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the 33rd consecutive year, St. John's track and field will be represented at an NCAA Championship meet. A trio of Johnnies are set to compete at the NCAA East Regional from Wednesday to Saturday in in Lexington, Ky.
Jamora Alves, Chinenye Josephine Onourah and Naiara Garcia-Moreno were selected for discus, 400-meter run and 800-meter run respectively. Wednesday's meet at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility is set to begin at 10 a.m. with all preliminary rounds of the men's events.
On Thursday, Onourah and Garcia-Moreno will toe the line in their respective events for the first day of the women's competition in the evening session.
Student-athletes that finish in the top-12 in both the East and West Regional will make up the field of 24 competitors in the NCAA National Championship in Eugene, Ore., scheduled for June 10-13 at historic Hayward Field.
Onourah's 400-meter dash preliminary round is scheduled for 7:25 p.m. The Bangkok, Thailand native collected her fifth individual BIG EAST 400-meter title, running a season-best time of 52.68 seconds in the finals at the conference championships two weeks ago. The mark ranks third on the outdoor program's all-time list and currently sits 39th in the East Region.
Garcia-Moreno follows at 7:50 p.m. in the preliminary round of the 800-meter run. The Malaga, Spain, product collected a bronze medal in the 800m final at the BIG EAST Championships with a time of 2 minutes, 3.81 seconds. In the fastest 800-meter final in the meet's history, all three medalists dipped under the previous meet record of 2:04.03. The sophomore ranks 23rd in the East Region.
If both student-athletes advance, the quarterfinal round for both events will take place on Saturday evening for a chance to punch their ticket to the NCAA National Championship. The 400-meter dash is scheduled for 6:50 p.m. and the 800-meter run for 7:05 p.m.
Alves will compete in the discus throw on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of the first field event session.
Heading into Saturday's competition, the reigning Most Outstanding Field Performer at the BIG EAST Track and Field Championships leads the way with a top-15 mark in the East Region in the event.
The senior broke a 28-year-old program record in the discus with a toss of 55.89 meters (183 feet, 4 inches). Alves also broke her own Grenada national record in the event, which currently ranks 24th in NCAA Division I. The Carriacou, Grenada native is looking to make her third trip to Eugene, she was named a USTFCCCA All-American Honorable Mention in 2023 and 2025.
