Alves Wins Shot Put; St. John’s Sits Third at BIG EAST Outdoor Championships

The senior claimed her eighth individual title
STORRS, Conn. – The St. John's track and field team currently sits in third place after six events at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, presented by Jeep, heading into the final day of competition. Jamora Alves cemented herself as one of the most decorated athletes in program history, claiming the shot put title with a toss of 15.46 meters (50 feet, 8.75 inches).
This is the second outdoor shot put title of Alves' storied career, as she now holds the most individual titles in program history. The Grenada native will aim for her ninth individual title tomorrow in the discus. Alves was joined by teammate Juliet Smith on the podium, who secured a bronze medal with a toss of 13.56m (44 feet, 6 inches) to secure an additional six points for the Red Storm.
Also making the podium was Cassandra Lemus-Sodji, who claimed a bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 6.08m (19 feet, 11.50 inches) in the second round. This is the senior's eighth All-Conference selection.
Yesterday, senior Desiree Pagan kicked off the championship with a sixth-place showing in the hammer throw. Her first-round toss of 47.66m (156 feet, 6 inches) was enough to secure three points for the Red Storm.
On Saturday, Jerese Allwood and Nia-Ruby Forbes-Agyepong secured qualifying times in the 100-meter hurdles. The pair each ran a personal best, stopping the clock in 14.55 and 14.40, respectively.
Led by Chinenye Josephine Onourah, the Johnnies secured a staggering four spots in the 400-meter final tomorrow. Onourah, who leads the field with a time of 53.59, is joined by Kettia Ambrose, Nyla Henderson and Jalen Jackson. The quartet will toe the line against three student-athletes from DePaul and one from UConn.
Ryana Dennis and Lemus-Sodji punched their tickets to the 100-meter final.
In the 800-meter run, Naiara Garcia-Moreno won the first heat of the half mile. The sophomore ran 2 minutes, 12.23 seconds.
The Johnnies advanced a trio of 400-meter hurdlers to the finals, with Maddie Kelso-Heap leading the way with a time of 1:01.77. She will be joined by Djassi Dean and Ciara Wiltshire.
Ambrose, Dennis and Jackson will double back for the 200-meter final. Ambrose won heat two with a personal-best time of 24.06.
Day Three begins with the triple jump and discus at 11 a.m., with the first running event starting at noon.
