This is the 33rd consecutive year that at least one Red Storm student-athlete has made an NCAA appearance
INDIANPOLIS – A trio of St. John's track and field student-athletes secured bids to NCAA East Regional meet in Lexington, Ky., the NCAA announced on Thursday. Action from University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility runs from May 27-30.
Jamora Alves, Chinenye Josephine Onourah and Naiara Garcia-Moreno were selected for discus, 400-meter run and 800-meter run respectively. This marks the 33rd consecutive year that at least one Johnnie has made an NCAA appearance.
Heading into next weekend's competition, the reigning Most Outstanding Field Performer at the BIG EAST Track and Field Championships last weekend, Alves leads the way with a top 15-mark in the East Region in the discus throw.
The senior broke a 28-year-old program record in the discus with a toss of 55.89 meters (183 feet, 4 inches). Alves also broke her own Grenada national record in the event, set last year at the 129th Penn Relays. The mark currently ranks 24th in the NCAA Division I.
On the track, Onourah collected her fifth individual BIG EAST 400-meter title, running a seasons-best time of 52.68 seconds in the finals. The mark ranks third on the outdoor all-time list and is 39th in the East Region.
Garcia-Moreno collected a bronze medal in the 800m final with a time of 2-minutes, 3.81 seconds. In the fastest 800-meter final in BIG EAST Championship history, all three medalists dipped under the previous meet record of 2:04.03. The sophomore ranks 23rd in the East.
The top 12 finishers in each individual and relay event from both the East and West regional sites advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships final site in Eugene, Oregon, from June 10-13 at historic Hayward Field.
