Tyron Matuta makes season-high six saves in the losing effort
Playing without the services of four everyday starters, the St. John's men's soccer team battled Princeton for more than 90 minutes on Tuesday night before falling in overtime, 1-0, to the Tigers at Belson Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tyron Matuta put forth a valiant effort to quell the potent Princeton offense, turning aside a season-high six shots and making several other key plays that did not appear on the score sheet.
On the game, Princeton (6-4-1, 1-0-1) outshot the Red Storm (6-5-1, 2-1-1) by a 19-5 margin and recorded 13 corner kicks to the Johnnies' two. The Tigers are now 6-2-1 in their last nine decisions.
Freshmen Luke Hansen, Drew Rosen and Josiah Crawford made their first collegiate starts on Tuesday. Hansen recorded a goal-saving effort in the 68th minute, deflecting a wide open look at the net off the foot of Princeton's Jeremy Colvin.
Tani Oluwaseyi logged 54 minutes off the bench for St. John's and led the team with two shots, both of which were stellar chances. The freshman from Mississauga, Ont., sent one just wide of the back post in the 59th minute before having a header smothered by Princeton keeper Mohamed Abdelhamid in the 84th. Mauricio Rivas, Skage Simonsen and Niko Petridis also registered shots for St. John's on the evening.
Matt Forster and Brandon Duarte were suspended for Tuesday's game after receiving red cards in Saturday's loss to Creighton.
Cole Morokhovich recorded the lone goal of the game in the 92nd minute with Gaby Paniagua and Michael Osei Wusu picking up assists on the play. Osei Wusu began the sequence with a throw-in on the far side that was headed along by Paniagua to Morokhvich in the 18-yard box. The junior chipped a shot toward the bottom right corner of the cage and past the outstretched hands of Matuta, sealing the victory for Princeton.
Princeton dominated possession early, firing off the game's first six shots and recording five corner kicks before Rivas registered the Red Storm's first chance in the 31st minute.
At the intermission, Princeton held a 9-1 edge in shots, four of which were on net, and a 6-1 advantage in corners.
St. John's came out of the locker room for the second half with a renewed vigor, holding the Tigers without a shot for the first 19 minutes of the period and firing off two chances of its own.
Princeton unleashed a flurry of chances over the next several minutes, but the Red Storm defense answered on each occasion, highlighted by Hansen's goal-saving effort in the 68th.
The Johnnies and the Tigers traded opportunities over the remainder of regulation, highlighted by Oluwaseyi's header in the 84th. Princeton would go on to end the match less than two minutes into the extra period.
