St. John’s freshman guard recorded a double-double in her collegiate debut
Following an impressive rookie debut against Iona on Friday evening, Kadaja Bailey was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced on Monday.
Bailey, who was named Preseason BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, burst onto the scene recording a double-double in the Red Storm's season opener with the Gaels. The Long Beach, N.Y., native paced the Johnnies recording a team-high 14 points.
Bailey, a product of St. Mary's High School in Manhasset, N.Y., shot 60 percent from the floor overall hitting six of her 10 tries from the field. In 29 minutes of action against the Gaels, the local product also recorded a trio of steals and brought down a total 13 rebounds to help lift the Red Storm to a lopsided 61-35 victory over Iona.
The 6-foot guard's 13 boards were the most by any individual player across the BIG EAST this week and the highest number in a St. John's season opener since 2014 when Amber Thompson grabbed 14 en route to the team's 61-50 victory over Yale. In addition, it marked the most boards in a freshman debut under Head Coach Joe Tartamella.
Bailey and the Red Storm will return to action on Friday, traveling to Christl Arena for a matchup with Army, tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
