Historic season continues with first bid to NIVC in program history
NIVC Bracket
Â
After its first trip to the BIG EAST Championships since 2012, the St. John's volleyball team's season will continue in the postseason after earning its first bid to the NIVC in the history of the program.
Â
The Red Storm will head to Atlanta on Thursday, Nov. 29 to take on College of Charleston (21-11) on the campus of Georgia Tech. The first serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Â
The Cougars finished third in the Colonial Athletic Conference and fell in the conference semifinals against James Madison
Â
"We couldn't be more pleased with the opportunity to play in our programs very first NIVC post season tournament," Head Coach Joanne Persico said. "First and foremost I would like to thank our athletic director Mike Cragg for his incredible support in our volleyball program and his leadership in making this postseason opportunity a reality for our hard-working players. His vision for our volleyball program is exciting!"   Â
Â
St. John's will be one of 32 teams that will compete for the NIVC crown, which will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. The NIVC, originally called the WIVC, was brought back last season after a 21-year absence. The Johnnies are also the first BIG EAST program to compete in the event since it was brought back and the only conference school that will be competing in the event that this season pulled schools from 18 different conferences in the 2018 field.
Â
"This NIVC tournament consists of a blend of well-known Power 5 programs and a group of mid-major teams that give our young Johnnies an opportunity to once again compete for a Championship and gain valuable post season experience and one more chance to play together  against some of the better volleyball programs in the Country and memorably cap off their historic season as a student athlete," Persico said. "We are excited to still be able to train and compete this time of year with the other top teams in the Nation."
Â
The winner of the St. John's/College of Charleston match will take on either Georgia Tech or the University of South Florida on Nov. 30, also at Georgia Tech.
