QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 28, 2018) – The St. John's volleyball team will compete in the NIVC for the first time in program history on Thursday at 4 p.m. against College of Charleston on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Â
The match will come after the first BIG EAST Semifinal match for St. John's since 2012. Efrosini Alexakou was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team thanks to her 19 kill, 11 dig effort against Marquette. The BIG EAST Freshman of the Year leads the Red Storm in kills with 355 and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team for her performance in her first season in Queens.
Â
Joining her on the First Team were Erica Di Maulo and Amanda Sanabia. Di Maulo was a unanimous selection after recording 1,346 assists for the season, while Sanabia was named Libero of the Year by the BIG EAST and is approaching 700 digs on the season. The junior is 11 digs from becoming the first in program history to reach that mark.
Â
St. John's will be one of 32 teams that will compete for the NIVC crown, which will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. The NIVC, originally called the WIVC, was brought back last season after a 21-year absence. The Johnnies are also the first BIG EAST program to compete in the event since it was brought back and the only conference school that will be competing in the event that this season pulled schools from 18 different conferences in the 2018 field.
Â
The Red Storm's first opponent is College of Charleston. The Cougars are 21-11 and also finished third in their conference with an 11-5 record in league play. College of Charleston also lost in the Semfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship to James Madison in four sets.
Â
The Cougars feature the CAA Player of the year in Devon Rachel. The senior from Louisville, Ky. leads College of Charleston with 443 kills and second in the Colonial with 3.92 kills per set.
Â
The outside hitter was joined on the CAA First Team by teammate Kennedy Madison. Madison finished second on the team with 403 kills and also led the Cougars with 75 blocks. Senior setter Allison Beckman was named to the second team after finishing second in the conference with 1,326 assists on the season.
Â
