St. John’s Dominates Seton Hall, Wins in Three Sets

The St. John's volleyball team won its 11th conference match of the season on Friday night, knocking off Seton Hall in three sets on Senior Day for the Pirates.
"We had a phenomenal effort led by Erica Di Maulo to get that BIG EAST win on the road," Head Coach Joanne Persico said. "Our group played well and our bench showed great spirit against a scrappy Seton Hall team that's tough to beat at home. I'm proud of my group and proud of my staff."
Di Maulo finished the match with 42 assists, five digs, five blocks, and four kills in the victory. The Johnnies improve to 22-9 overall with the victory.
Efrosini Alexakou led the way with 14 kills against the Pirates. She added 14 digs in the three sets for her twelfth double-double of the 2018 season.
With her first dig of the match, Amanda Sanabia passed Gabriela Petkova for sixth place in program history in career digs. She finished the match with 13 putting her 122 digs behind Kristy Mercein, who amassed 1,433 in her four years at St. John's from 1998-2001.
The Red Storm began the match with a 25-18 set one victory. Hanna Wagner led the Johnnies in the opener with four kills on four attempts and two blocks. Di Maulo delivered 11 assists and Sanabia added nine digs in the first set alone.
Seton Hall jumped out to a 10-5 lead over the Johnnies before a kill by Kayley Wood sparked a 10-3 run for the Johnnies to put them up 15-13. After the Pirates tied the set, St. John's finished on another 10-3 run with a kill by Wagner giving the Red Storm a 1-0 set lead.
St. John's hit .424 as a team in a dominant 25-15 second set victory. Five Johnnies put up at least three kills in the frame with Alexakou leading the way with four. Sheena Yoshioka led the team with four digs in the second set and Di Maulo added three rejections in the second set alone.
St. John's led 11-10 before scoring 14 of the next 19 points to take the set, including the final six points to give them a commanding 2-0 set lead.
The Red Storm finished the match in the third thanks to five kills from Nia Diaz. The redshirt junior finished the match with nine kills on 12 attempts and added three blocks in the match. Despite the Pirates effort to extend their Senior Day fell short as the Johnnies finished the match on a 15-6 run, taking it with back-to-back attack errors by Seton Hall.
The Johnnies will finish their regular season next weekend, first taking on DePaul on Friday at 8 p.m.
