Bob Guerriero Announces 2019 St. John’s Softball Schedule

2019 campaign features 50 games and two trips to Florida.
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 27, 2018) – Entering his first season at the helm of the program in 2019, St. John's Softball Interim Head Coach Bob Guerriero has announced the schedule for his team's upcoming campaign.
The 50-game slate will pit the Red Storm against some of the best competition the NCAA has to offer. In all, the Johnnies will face eight teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament, including a pair of SEC foes that advanced past the regional round. Georgia, who the Red Storm will face during the season's opening weekend, earned a spot in last year's Women's College World Series and finished eighth in the final NFCA Coaches Poll.
Overall, 18 of the Red Storm's 34 different opponents turned in a winning record last season while four compiled at least 40 victories in 2018.
St. John's starts its season with a 20-game road swing, beginning with a trip to the FAU First Pitch Classic. The Red Storm will kick off the season against Georgia and the host Owls on Feb. 8, before squaring off with 2018 MEAC Champion Bethune Cookman and Big Ten foe Indiana the following day. The Johnnies will then close out the tournament with a clash against Virginia on Feb. 10.
The Johnnies will return south the following weekend, heading to Columbia, S.C., for Gamecock Invitational beginning on Feb. 15. The Johnnies will open the tournament with UNCG on Friday before facing UNCG again and Campbell on Saturday. The Spartans turned in a 46-13 record last season, which featured a 13-3 mark in the SoCon and a league title. The Red Storm will then close out their time in the Palmetto State with a clash against the host Gamecocks, who won 49 games last season before falling to Arizona State in the Super Regional.
Following a weekend off to end February, the Red Storm will spend its spring break in the Sunshine State, heading to Florida for a pair of tournaments beginning with the Madeira Beach Invitational on March 2. The Johnnies will square off with Boston College and Central Michigan on Saturday before facing Tennessee-Chattanooga and Georgia Southern the following day.
The Red Storm will then make the short trek from Madeira Beach to Clearwater for a pair of midweek matchups, taking on South Dakota State and the University of Pennsylvania on March 5 and 6, respectively.
Following its contests with the Jackrabbits and the Quakers, St. John's will remain in Clearwater and play five games in three days at the USF Series. The Johnnies will kick off action on Friday, March 8, with contests against Western Michigan and Toledo. Following bouts with USC Upstate and 2018 AAC Champion USF on Saturday, the Red Storm will close out its stay in the Sunshine State with a Sunday morning tilt against UCF.
After going more than a month without a home tilt, the Johnnies will play 10-straight contests at Red Storm Field beginning with the fifth annual St. John's Invitational beginning on Friday, March 15.
Long a showcase for the top softball talent in the New York Metropolitan Area, the fifth-annual St. John's Invitational will begin with a Friday afternoon showdown between the Johnnies and Hofstra, the 2018 CAA champs who won 41 games before getting eliminated by South Carolina at the NCAA Columbia Regional. The Red Storm's bout with the Pride will mark the first of two Friday games for the Johnnies, who will square off with Wagner later in the afternoon. St. John's will then host Holy Cross for single games on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for both contests against the Crusaders is slated for noon.
BIG EAST competition will kick off for the Red Storm on Friday, March 23, when the Johnnies host longtime conference foe Providence for the opening doubleheader of a three-game set. After closing their series with Providence the following day, the Johnnies will then welcome Stony Brook in a midweek matchup on March 27 before hosting their second-straight conference series against Georgetown beginning with a doubleheader on March 30 followed by a single game the next afternoon.
The Red Storm will cross borough lines when it visits LIU Brooklyn on April 3 before heading to Omaha for a rematch of the 2018 BIG EAST semifinal against Creighton on April 6 and 7.
A single home game against Manhattan on April 10 precedes the shortest road trip of the season for St. John's, as the Red Storm travels to Seton Hall for a three-game set beginning on April 13. St. John's has won 14 of its last 16 contests with the Pirates dating back to 2014.
The Red Storm will return to action on April 18, welcoming reigning conference champion DePaul to Queens for a modified series over Easter Weekend. The two teams, who have met in the BIG EAST Championship Game twice in the last five seasons, will play a single game on Thursday before squaring off in a Saturday doubleheader.
The Red Storm will travel to New Rochelle for a meeting with Iona on April 24 before playing its final home games of the regular season against Villanova on April 27 and 28.
The Johnnies will close out non-conference action with a trip to the Bronx, squaring off with local rival Fordham on May 1 at Bahoshy Field. The Rams have won six-straight Atlantic 10 titles and have appeared in eight of the last nine NCAA Tournaments, but fell to the Red Storm, 14-11, last season in Queens.
The Red Storm will conclude its regular season with a series at Butler, a team that the Johnnies swept to end the 2018 BIG EAST campaign and secure a third-place in finish in the conference standings.
The BIG EAST Softball Championship will once again return to the Ballpark at Rosemont beginning on May 10. The Johnnies will look to claim their second conference crown in five years at the park, which plays host to the Chicago Bandits of National Pro Fastpitch.
