St. John's Finishes Third at Wildcat Invitational

MALVERN Pa. - Finishing ahead of 16 other competing programs, the St. John's men's golf team recorded its best finish of the 2017-18 campaign on Tuesday after carding a final round 294 to claim third place at the Wildcat Invitational.
"The guys played well this week," St. John's head coach Mal Galletta said."I am very pleased with the team's performance, with a sixth and third place finish on this road trip to Towson and Villanova."
Junior Andrew Baek saw improvement throughout the tournament as he closed out play shooting a team-low 71, while draining four birdies over Tuesday's final 18. The Arcadia, Calif., native recorded a two-round 143 (+1) to finish in a tie for ninth place.
Behind a final round score of 74, sophomore Gerald Mackedon posted a two-round 146 to finish inside the top-20. The Port Jefferson native birdied three times on the day draining two in-a-row on the back nine.
Austin Briggs turned over a final round 75 for St. John's to finish with a combined 147. Rounding out the scoring for the Johnnies was Ross Moore and Matthew Sweeney who posted a 148 and 153, respectively.
David Powers of St. Peter's University received medalist honors by shooting a 138 (-4) to hold a two-stroke lead. As a team, Drexel remained atop the leaderboard, carding a 573 (+5) to place the Dragons five strokes ahead of Rhode Island to claim the team title.
The Johnnies prepare to travel to New Haven, Conn. where they will compete in the Yale Intercollegiate on April 14.
