QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a phenomenal performance at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Miami, Maya Stephens was named the BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon by the conference office.
The accolade marks the first of the outdoor season and the third of the 2018 campaign for the Johnnies.
Stephens led the Red Storm with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Her time of 52.86 was a career best in a St. John's uniform, finishing nearly an entire second ahead of the competition.
The clip currently leads the BIG EAST and lists 15th nationally. Stephens also recorded a 24.31 second finish in the 200 meters to rank second in the league this season.
Through the 2018 season, Stephens has captured first-place marks at the 2018 Metropolitan Indoor Championships, 2018 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships, and this weekend's meet. The Canadian has reached the podium in at least one event in six of the eight competitions this season.
The senior was one of many competitors to eclipse a new career mark over the weekend as the Johnnies shined in both the Magic City and at the Wagner College Invitational.
St. John's will look to build off its solid weekend at the 2018 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships, hosted by Rutgers University, on April 13 and 14.
