Attoya Harvey sets meet record in the 1,500-meter run for one of six Red Storm event victories
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team hosted The Big Hurt on Saturday afternoon, earning six event wins and 10 top-five finishes at the DaSilva Memorial Track and Field Complex.
Junior Attoya Harvey highlighted the day by setting a meet record in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the line in 4 minutes, 50.30 seconds in her first outdoor season as a Johnnie. The West Demerara, Guyana native was the only competitor in the field to dip under five minutes, breaking teammate Cristina Stanescu's previous meet record of 5:03.90. Harvey also placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.30.
Mia-Sara Torres kicked off the winning efforts for the Red Storm, capturing the 2,000-meter steeplechase title in 8:39.68.
In the sprints, Ava Mabry-Spencer secured the top time in the women's 100-meter dash, finishing in 14.98. The Johnnies dominated the event, claiming the top four spots, as Delicia Bent, Jayla Criss and Tatiana Camilo finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
St. John's also swept the hurdle events. Jerese Allwood captured the 100-meter hurdles title in 14.98, putting her tenth all-time in program history. Djassi Dean finished as the top collegian in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.43, solidifying her second top-10 all-time mark. Nia-Ruby Forbes-Agyepong placed second in both the 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters, while Ciara Wiltshire and Sophia Leslie finished second and third in the 400-meter hurdles.
Rounding out the event winners, Camilo claimed first in the long jump with a leap of 5.18 meters (17 feet), while Jade Dockery followed closely in second with a mark of 5.10 meters (16 feet, 8.75 inches).
Blessing Assoumany added a pair of top-five finishes, placing third in the 400 meters with a time of 58.10 and fifth in the 200 meters in 27.29.
St. John's returns to action next weekend at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium on April 3. The Red Storm placed second as a team during the indoor championships and fourth during the cross country season.
