Red Storm finished second at the indoor championship and fourth during cross country
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team will aim to defend its title at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships on Friday afternoon at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island.
The Johnnies have enjoyed success at the previous two Metropolitan Championships, finishing second during the indoor season and fourth during the cross country season in October.
Last weekend, the Red Storm hosted The Big Hurt at the DaSilva Memorial Track and Field Complex, recording six event wins and 10 top-five finishes. Attoya Harvey highlighted the meet with a victory in the 1,500 meters, clocking a meet-record time of 4-minutes 50.30 seconds as the only runner under five minutes. Mia-Sara Torres added a win in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, while Ava Mabry-Spencer led a dominant showing in the 100-meter dash as the Johnnies claimed the top four spots.
St. John's also swept the hurdle events, with Jerese Allwood winning the 100-meter hurdles and Djassi Dean finishing as the top collegian in the 400-meter hurdles. Tatiana Camilo rounded out the victories with a first-place finish in the long jump.
The Red Storm will be led by Jamora Alves, who is slated to compete in the discus throw and shot put. The Grenada native opened the outdoor season with an impressive showing at the USF Alumni Invitational, nearly tossing a personal best in the shot put with a mark of 15.38 meters (50 feet, 5.50 inches).
Also in the field, Fia Viklund returns to the runway for the triple jump after opening her outdoor campaign with a leap of 12.24 meters (40 feet, 2 inches). In the long jump, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji recorded a 6.15-meter (20 feet, 2.25 inches) mark at USF for the best season opener of her career and will also compete in the 200 meters.
On the track, Naiara Garcia-Moreno is set to compete in the 1,500 meters after posting a time of 4:25.38 at the USF Alumni Invitational, which ranks among the top-10 times in the BIG EAST this season.
Nyla Henderson and Chinenye Josephine Onourah will both race in the 400-meters, with Onourah also scheduled to compete in the 200-meters.
The Johnnies are also set to compete in three relays: the 4x100-meters, 4x400-meters and 4x800-meters.
Following the Metropolitan Championships, Red Storm will travel back to Tampa, Fla., to compete in the South Florida Invite hosted by USF on April 11.
