St. John’s Kickoffs the Outdoor Season at USF Alumni Invitational

Garcia-Moreno continues dominate form in the 800-meters and 1,500-meters
TAMPA, Fla. – The St. John's track and field team began the outdoor season with a trip to Tampa, Fla., for the USF Alumni Invitational.
The Red Storm secured two wins and six top-10 finishes, highlighted by Naiara Garcia-Morenos 800-meter/1,500-meter gold medal double. Cassandra Lemus-Sodji also kept her championship form, placing second in the long jump.
Garcia-Moreno's time of 2-mintues, 5.36 seconds in the half-mile ranks fourth in the NCAA East Region and on top of the BIG EAST. In the 1,500m, her time of 4:25.38 ranks 11th in East Region, first in the BIG EAST and second in program history.
Lemus-Sodji's first jump was her best of the series, leaping 6.15m (20 feet, 2.25 inches). The mark is currently sixth in the NCAA East Regional rankings, first in the league rankings and tied for third all-time in program history.
In the throws, Jamora Alves notched a top-five finish in the shot put. Her fifth place heave of 15.38m (50 feet, 5.50 inches) ranks third all-time in program history. The Grenada native now owns four of the top-10 marks in program history.
On the track, Kettia Ambrose placed seventh in the 400-meter dash. Her time of 54.46 led the long sprint group for the Johnnies.
Fia Viklund rounded out the top-10 marks, with an eighth place showing in the triple jump. On her fourth-round attempt the senior recorded a 12.24m (40 feet, 2 inches) jump, which currently sits second in the BIG EAST standings.
St. John's will return to Queens next weekend, hosting the Big Hurt at the DaSilva Athletic Complex on March 28.
