Gretchen Bowie Earns BIG EAST Player of the Week

QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading St. John's to an undefeated 4-0 week that included a sweep over BIG EAST foe Butler to clinch a spot in the league's postseason tournament, sophomore Gretchen Bowie was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
The accolade marks the second time this season that Bowie has been tabbed as the conference's top player.
Bowie brought a powerful bat this week, pacing the Red Storm (24-25, 12-6 BIG EAST) with a .667 clip. The Sparta, N.J., native went 10-for-15 at the plate with a team-most five home runs, including a pair of multi-homer games to increase her season total to 15.
The sophomore started the week with a bang in a Thursday showdown with local foe Fordham, as Bowie reached base with three hits on five plate appearances. The second-year Johnnie belted a duo of rountrippers to contribute to a record-breaking six home runs at Red Storm Field in a 14-11 triumph.
Riding the momentum of Thursday's game, Bowie continued her stellar offensive effort in the team's doubleheader against Butler on Saturday. The sophomore opened up the afternoon with a pair of long balls in game one, marking the third time this season that the junior has recorded a multi-home run game. On the day, Bowie recorded a combined six hits over the two tilts including three homers.
The sophomore capped off the weekend sweep over the Bulldogs with a base hit in Sunday's finale. With the single, Bowie has now recorded at least one base knock in eight-straight games for St. John's.
Concluding the regular season, Bowie ranks second in the BIG EAST in slugging percentage with a .748 mark and home runs with 15 behind teammate Krystal Puga. The sophomore also sits inside the top-five for RBIs with 40 and total bases with 86.
Bowie and the rest of the Red Storm returns to the diamond on Friday to take on No.2 seeded Creighton in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET and can be watched live on FS2.
