QUEENS, N.Y. - After rising to the top of the conference stage, Alan Nunez Aguilera made his mark on the international level by winning the bronze medal for mixed doubles tennis at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Aguilera was chosen to represent his home nation of Mexico at the games after being nominated by the Mexican Olympic Committee to compete in the games. The senior participated in the doubles and mixed doubles divisions of the tournament, finishing with a combined record of 3-2 against competitors from across Central America and the Caribbean.
Paired with Andrea Villarreal, ranked 715 by the Internal Tennis Federation (ITF) among all professional female players in doubles, the duo began the tournament against a pair from El Salvador in the primary round. After dropping the opening set, 6-4, Aguilera and Villarreal rebounded for a 6-2 victory of their own to send the match to a thrilling tiebreaking set. There, the duo triumphed by a 10-5 score to advance to the quarterfinal round.
In the quarterfinal, Aguilera and Villarreal had their easiest win of the tournament; posting a pair of set 6-3 and 6-2 victories over their opponents from Grenada to book a berth in the medal round and a date with the No. 2 seeded doubles pairing in the semifinal.
Facing the second-ranked duo from the host nation of Colombia, Aguilera and Villarreal fell in a pair of identical 6-3 scores to eliminate the pairing from gold medal contention.
