St. John's Downs Wagner 3-1 in Preseason Opener

Zsani Kajan tallied two goals in the team’s exhibition debut
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's opened up the preseason portion of its schedule with a 3-1 victory over Wagner on Monday evening at Belson Stadium.
Zsani Kajan gave a stellar effort for the Johnnies, scoring a pair of goals and recording a team-most seven shots, with four of those being on goal.
Jordan Kamp, Vanessa Cole and Meredith Reinhardt each saw action for St. John's turning aside a trio of shots.
The Red Storm got on the board early when Kajan's free kick found the back of the net from distance in the second minute off a foul. Wagner responded in the eighth minute with a goal of its own to equalize the affair.
The Red Storm would fire five more shots on target to outshoot the Seahawks 7-4 as St. John's and Wagner entered the second period knotted at one.
Following the first 30-minute frame, the Johnnies regained the lead in the 54th minute when an Emily Purtell free kick from long range fell to Kayla Mesaros and the freshman fired a ball that sailed to the back of the net to give St. John's a 2-1 lead.
The Red Storm made it a two-goal game in the 72nd minute when Kajan twirled around her defender in the box and rocketed a shot into the right corner off a slick feed from Samie Scaffidi to give the Johnnies a 3-1 lead and Kajan her second goal of the contest.
The duo of Reinhardt and Cole held Wagner scoreless over the final 60 minutes of the contest to help preserve the St. John's victory.
The Johnnies will conclude exhibition play on Thursday with a trip to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh at 7 p.m.
