QUEENS, N.Y. (Aug. 30, 2018) – Despite narrowing its deficit to one in the closing minutes of the game, the St. John's women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early Drexel lead as the Red Storm fell to the Dragons, 2-1, at Vidas Field on Thursday evening.
Zsani Kajan recorded the Johnnies' lone goal of the match in the 88th minute off of a penalty kick. With her third tally of the young season, the redshirt sophomore has already surpassed her goal total from all of 2017.
Meredith Reinhardt and Jordan Kamp turned away a combined eight shots between the pipes for the Johnnies against a solid Dragon's offensive attack.
Kiera Hennessy scored a pair of first half goals for the Dragons, as the 2018 Preseason All-CAA selection was set up twice for headers by Emma Heckenberg. Both goals came off of corner kicks to secure Drexel a 2-0 advantage following the opening 45 minutes of play.
The Dragons registered the game's first several chances, firing a corner kick followed by back-to-back shot attempts near the five-minute mark but the St. John's defense alongside Reinhardt held strong, successfully fending off both shots.
Kajan registered a chance in the sixth minute, as she went one-on-one with the Dragon's goalkeeper Libby Baeza, who denied Kajan's attempt.
With her team trailing 1-0 less than 10 minutes later, Christina Bellero nearly pulled the Johnnies even. The Melville, N.Y., native used her pace to break away from her defender in the offensive third, but her powerful shot was saved by Benza.
In the 88th minute, St. John's narrowed its deficit to just one, as the Red Storm took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity. Kajan powered a shot to the bottom left corner of the cage to put the Red Storm on the board, but the Johnnies were unable to make the comeback.
The Dragons outshot the Red Storm, 14-12, on the evening. Hennessy registered three of the team's 14 attempts, two of which resulted in goals.
