Red Storm and Pirates to kick off the conference season on Saturday
The St. John's men's soccer program will be begin its 34th season of BIG EAST play on Saturday, welcoming cross-river rival Seton Hall to Belson Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The contest will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with John Fanta providing the play by play and Meghan Caffrey reporting from the sidelines.
The owner of a league-record nine BIG EAST tournament titles, the Red Storm enters the 2018 conference season with an all-time mark of 165-78-48 (.649) during league play, including a 154-64-45 (.671) effort under the direction of Dr. Dave Masur. Dating back to the first year of BIG EAST men's soccer in 1985, the Johnnies own a record of 18-9-6 in conference openers, including a 3-1 mark against Seton Hall. Prior to topping the Pirates, 1-0, in the team's BIG EAST debut last season in South Orange, St. John's went without a win for seven-straight years in conference openers (0-5-2).
The Johnnies welcome the Pirates to Belson Stadium on the heels of a hard-fought loss to Loyola Maryland, 1-0, on Tuesday night in Queens. The Red Storm played even for 77 minutes with the preseason Patriot League favorite before an unlucky deflection off the foot of a St. John's defender gave the Greyhounds the eventual game winner in the 78th minute.
In a sporting landscape increasingly dominated by the use of advanced statistics, sometimes the difference between a win and a loss boils down to something as simple as putting the ball in the back of the net. In games this year when the Red Storm scores at least one goal, the team is 3-0; in contests where the Johnnies fail to make their mark on the scoresheet, they are 0-3. The Red Storm is averaging 2.3 goals per contest in its three wins, pumping in four goals at Loyola Marymount before putting up a pair in an overtime victory against Fairfield on Aug. 31.
St. John's sports one of the freshest rosters in the nations with 15 newcomers having seen the field so far this season, including 12 student-athletes in their first year of Division I soccer. Five first-year Division I players have started all six of the Red Storm's contests so far this season while goalkeeper Tyron Matuta, a newcomer from Switzerland, has played the full 90 minutes in three of the team's six games. Additionally, freshman Tani Oluwaseyi, who has played in all six matches but has yet to crack the starting XI, is tied for first among conference freshmen in points with teammate Skage Simonsen and Marquette's Lukas Sunesson.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Andreas Lindberg, Seton Hall comes to Queens with a record of 2-1-1 on the young season. The Pirates opened the campaign with wins on the road at Army and Central Connecticut State before falling to Delaware and playing Hofstra to a scoreless draw in the team's home opener.
The Pirates are led offensively by a pair of newcomers in freshman CJ Tibbling and junior Carlton McKenzie. Tibbling, a native of Jarna, Sweden, has two goals and one assist to pace the team while McKenzie, who hails from Birmingham, England, has chipped in a pair of tallies. Sophomore transfer Andreas Nota has played every minute in goal for the Pirates this season, compiling a goals against average of 1.14 and stopping 79.2 percent of the shots on goal that he has faced.
St. John's has faced Seton Hall more often than any other opponent in program history, holding a 24-12-3 record in 39 meetings all-time between the two teams. After not facing the Pirates for three-consecutive seasons prior to conference realignment, St. John's is 4-1-0 against Seton Hall in the new BIG EAST, including a 1-0 win in last year's league opener in South Orange. Since a 5-0 win for St. John's in the final game of the 2013 regular season, each of the last four meetings between the two teams have been 1-0 decisions.
