Â
This marks the fourth match in seven days for the Johnnies to start conference play. The Red Storm began BIG EAST play last Wednesday in a five-set loss to Georgetown. St. John's followed that with a comeback victory in the home opener against Xavier after falling behind 2-0. The Red Storm won the next three sets to take the match. The team ended the weekend against Butler and for the third time in a row it went to five sets with St. John's coming out on top 3-2 to improve to 2-1 in the league.
Â
A couple of Johnnies enter the conference clash while climbing the program record board. Amanda Sanabia enters the match with 1,044 career digs, just four away from tying Olga Roudovski for 10th on the all-time list while Erica Di Maulo is closing in on Deniz Mutlugil. The setter is now 195 assists away from tying for the fourth-most in program history.
Â
Villanova comes into the match at 8-6 and split in the first weekend of BIG EAST play. The Wildcats defeated Seton Hall on Wednesday and went up 2-0 on Georgetown before dropping the next three sets and ending the weekend 1-1 in conference play. Clare Delaplane ranks fourth in conference play averaging 4.00 kills per set in the first two matches. The freshman ranks second on the team overall with 128 kills in 2018 and posted a career-high 22 against Seton Hall in the conference opener.
Â
The Wildcats boast a key win over Utah at home back on Sept. 7. Villanova dropped the now #23 ranked Utes in five sets in its home opener. The Wildcats also defeated city-rival Temple in the same weekend.
Â
Josh Steinbach is in his 12th season at Villanova and has won more matches than any other coach in Villanova's history. He was named the 2015 AVCA East Coast Region Coach of the Year and comes off a season that had the Wildcats back in the BIG EAST Tournament after an 18-12 finish. The team lost to Creighton in the first round of the conference tournament.
Villanova and St. John's split 1-1 last season with both teams taking a road victory at the expense of the other. Villanova leads the all-time series between the two schools 18-13 with the Johnnies 6-7 on the road against the Wildcats.
