Samie Scaffidi gets the Red Storm on the board in the 51st minute
The St. John's women's soccer team picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season Thursday night with a 2-1 victory over Creighton at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
With a win over the Bluejays, St. John's (5-6-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) secured its first road victory of the 2018 campaign. The Johnnies have now beaten Creighton (4-6-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) in three of the team's last four contests.
After a scoreless first half for both teams, Samie Scaffidi recorded her second goal of the season. The senior forward found the back of the net in the 51st minute off a cross pass from Ormskirk, England, native Lucy Whipp to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead.
St. John's goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt picked up her fourth win of the year tying a season-high six saves and improving her record to 4-4-0 on the campaign.
St. John's recorded the first shot of the evening just 44 seconds into the opening stanza, as Whipp sent a pass inside to Christina Bellero who got the first look on goal but was turned aside by Creighton's goalkeeper Katie Sullivan.
Just six minutes out of the intermission, Whipp lofted a cross to the inside of the six-yard box for Scaffidi. The 5-foot-4 Silver Spring, Md., native settled the ball before sending a powerful right-footed strike to the center of the cage, slipping one past the hands of Sullivan and putting the Johnnies ahead 1-0 in the 51st minute.
The Red Storm extended its lead to 2-0 in the 72nd minute when freshman Kayla Mesaros powered a ball high in the air to undo the Bluejays defense and result in a Creighton own goal.
With seconds left to play in the match, the Bluejays finally got on the board with a goal off the foot of Ansley Atkinson in the 90th minute but there was not enough time for a comeback as the Red Storm claimed the 2-1 victory.
St. John's will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon, as the Johnnies travel to Milwaukee for a contest with Marquette. First kick is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
