The St. John's volleyball team will return to Carnesecca Arena on Saturday to take on Seton Hall after playing four five-set matches in seven days.
Â
It marked the first time in program history the Johnnies have played in four-straight five setters and the ninth time this season the Red Storm have gone the full five sets. That is one shy of the program record for most five-set matches in a single season, set by the 2004 St. John's team.
Â
The Red Storm fell to 2-2 in the BIG EAST with a loss on Tuesday night to Villanova. Amanda Sanabia was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and followed that up with a career-high 34 digs in the match. With the performance, the junior moved into ninth place in program history with 1,078 career digs. She passed Olga Roudovski for tenth and Nicole Colaluca for ninth against the Wildcats and now trails Karin Palgutova by 50 digs for eighth.
Â
Efrosini Alexakou led the way in the loss with 12 kills. She added a career-high 19 digs for her fifth double double of the season. Jordan McCalla added 10 kills in the effort while Hanna Wagner led the way with six blocks. The junior now has at least five blocks in every conference match this season. Erica Di Maulo led the way with 37 assists and added 13 digs for her eighth double double of the year. The Preseason All-BIG EAST selection now has 29 double doubles on her career.
Â
Seton Hall enters the match with a 5-12 record and is looking for its first win in the BIG EAST. The Pirates started conference play 0-4 after being picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Â
Abby Thelen was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and is the current team leader in kills per set and hitting percentage with both totals ranking in the Top 10 in the conference. The senior has led the team in kills in three out of four conference matches this season.
Â
Allison Yaeger is now in her seventh year as head coach of the Pirates and is one of two coaches in program history to reach 100 wins. She led Seton Hall to a 28-8 record on her way to winning the 2014 AVCA Regional Coach of the Year and the 2014 BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
Â
Seton Hall swept St. John's last season, taking six out of seven sets against the Red Storm. The Pirates own the all-time series between the two schools and are 17-12 against the Johnnies and have taken the last three matches overall.
