Red Storm Downs Seton Hall in Three Sets

St. John’s improves to 3-2 in BIG EAST play with the win

The Red Storm volleyball team defeated Seton Hall at home in three sets Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-2 in the BIG EAST.
Efrosini Alexakou led the Red Storm (14-6, 3-2) with 13 kills on 26 attempts. The freshman recorded her sixth double double of the season after adding 12 digs in the contest. The Johnnies hit .319 as a team in the three sets, which was the team's highest clip in conference play.
Amanda Sanabia posted 25 digs, which now puts her 26 short of passing Karin Palgutova for eighth on the career digs list. The junior recorded her 400th dig of the season after posting 482 for St. John's in 2017.
The Red Storm took the first set 25-15 with Nia Diaz leading the way with four kills. The redshirt junior ended the night with eight kills and a hitting percentage of .389. Erica Di Maulo added 15 of her team-leading 40 assists in the first frame. The setter added one kill, one block, and one service ace in the match opener and finished with four blocks in the match, which tied Hanna Wagner for the most on the Johnnies. With a 17-14 lead, St. John's finished the set on an 8-1 run to take it 25-15.
The second set also went to the Johnnies thanks in part to six kills from Alexakou. Kayley Wood added five kills for the Red Storm in the frame and 11 in the match. The Pirates kept the second set close and with St. John's leading 18-11, Seton Hall scored 11 of the next 16 points to bring the score to 23-22 before kills by Alexakou and Wood gave the Johnnies a 25-23 set victory.
St. John's finished the Pirates in the third set 25-17 with Rachele Rastelli converting six of her nine attacks for kills, hitting .556 for the set. The freshman eclipsed the 200 kill mark on the season and finished with 12 in the match. Sheena Yoshioka came up with two service aces in the set and led the team in the category with two.
Seton Hall jumped out to an 8-4 lead in set three before the Red Storm started to come back. Yanjiao Zhao only played in the final frame, but posted her first career kill and five assists in the third. St. John's would finish the set on a 17-9 run and remained undefeated at home during conference play.
The Red Storm will next travel to Providence on Friday, Oct. 5 to take on the Friars at 6 p.m.
