St. John’s owns 14-2 all-time record against the Seawolves.
After winning two non-conference tournaments to open the 2018 season, the St. John's volleyball team will travel to Stony Brook on Tuesday night to take on the Seawolves at 7 p.m.
Â
Last weekend the Johnnies went 2-1 at the Cornell Invitational to win the event for the second consecutive year. The Red Storm started with a 3-0 win over Siena on Friday. St. John's hit .289 as a team and served 10 aces compared to six for the Saints.
Â
The Red Storm split two matches on Saturday to finish in a three-way tie in the standings. The day started with a five-set loss to Buffalo, the Johnnies first defeat of the season. Nia Diaz set a career best in kills with 14, while Lexie Lobdell and Erica Di Maulo posted double-doubles in the contest. Diaz was named to the All-Tournament Team and Di Maulo was named Tournament MVP.
Â
St. John's finished the event with host-school Cornell winning 3-0. The Johnnies took advantage of 22 errors by the Big Red over the course of three sets and won the match. The Red Storm went 8-3 in sets at the Cornell Invitational, which gave the team the best set percentage at the event, which was the tiebreaker used to determine the champion.
Â
Stony Brook (3-4) is coming off a 1-2 performance at the Akron Invitational. The Seawolves dropped two matches on Saturday against Maryland and Akron before defeating Canisius on Sunday. Sophomore Kiani Kerstetter was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 49 digs and 11 assists in the three matches.
Â
Head Coach Kristin Belzung is in her second season at Stony Brook and led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in year one. In 2017, the Seawolves defeated the Red Storm 3-2 in Queens, but the Johnnies own the all-time series lead between the two schools and are 14-2 against Stony Brook.
