Scaffidi and Bellero tally a season-high six shots each
The St. John's women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to Marquette on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields in Milwaukee.
Marquette's (3-8-1, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) Alyssa Bombacino broke a scoreless deadlock in the 78th minute when the forward powered a shot from 15 yards out to the right side of the net for the game's only tally.
St. John's (5-7-0, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) turned on the offensive pressure early in the match, outshooting the Golden Eagles 10-7 in the opening 45 minutes of play, leading 4-1 in shots on target. Overall the Red Storm outshot the Golden Eagles 20-19 with both Samie Scaffidi and Christina Bellero registering a season-high six strikes each.
After recording her second goal of the season in Thursday's win over Creighton, Scaffidi made an early attempt as the senior dribbled around her defender before powering a shot from outside the box towards the top of the net. The Silver Spring, Md., native's strike sailed wide to keep both teams scoreless in the 12th minute.
The Red Storm had a golden chance to take the lead in the 37th minute with Zsani Kajan on the service. The Budapest, Hungary, native rocketed a shot over the Marquette defenders to connect with Bellero. The senior headed the ball down toward the left corner of the net but it struck the iron of the goal post and deflected off to keep both teams scoreless.
In the second half, it was Marquette who started to take possession of the ball and control the match. In the 78th minute, a trio of Golden Eagles connected to find the back of the net for the game winner off the foot of Bombacino, her third tally of the season.
Just moments after the goal, St. John's nearly leveled the score as Claudia Cagnina saw her attempt from outside the box bounce off the crossbar in the 78th minute, marking the Johnnies' third attempt to hit off the woodwork in Sunday's contest.
Despite the loss, the Red Storm's defense alongside goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt held strong to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless for 78 minutes of play. Reinhart grabbed a total five saves on the day for a combined 11 over the last two BIG EAST contests. However, the Johnnies were unable to find the back of the net as Marquette was able to wind down the clock and escape with a 1-0 victory.
The Red Storm will return to action on Thursday evening, welcoming Providence to Belson Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 4, for a 7 p.m. tilt.
