Red Storm to face Marist, Wagner, and Dartmouth beginning on Friday afternoon
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will continue its spring season with three matches this weekend, taking on Marist and Wagner in a Friday tri-match before traveling to Dartmouth for its first road match of the season on Sunday.
The Red Storm will welcome Marist on Friday at noon before hosting Wagner later that night at 9 p.m. Both matches will be held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing.
After defeating Fairfield in its season opener, St. John's enters the weekend coming off a tough 4-3 loss at home to UMass this past Sunday. After holding a 3-1 lead, the Red Storm relinquished four-straight singles matches, including a trio of three-set thrillers at the No. 2,3 and 5 positions.
Jessica Livianu continued her impressive form as she won her top-flight singles match in straight sets (7-6 (7-0), 6-0) and improved her overall record to 4-0.
The Red Foxes have lost two-straight matches after sweeping Monmouth in their season opener. This will mark the second-consecutive season the Johnnies will host Marist in February, as the Red Storm notched a 6-1 victory over the Red Foxes in 2018.
Wagner started the 2018-19 season with a 3-2 record last fall. Just like the Red Foxes, the Seahawks swept Monmouth on Oct. 2nd and took home 6-1 victories against St. Francis-Brooklyn and Rider to finish the fall slate. However, in their first spring match of the season, Wagner fell victim to a sweep at the hands of NJIT, 7-0.
The Red Storm will make its first road trip of the spring season on Sunday to take on Dartmouth at 1 p.m. The Big Green currently holds a 1-2 record on the season and is coming off its first win of the season over UConn last Sunday.
Coach Leo's squad will look to pick up some positive momentum heading into a tri-match with LIU-Brooklyn and Fairleigh Dickinson next Friday. The Red Storm will also host a home contest against Binghamton at Cunningham Park on Sunday Feb. 10.
