Jack Simon and Alex Kyriacou finish inside the top-15
The St. John's men's golf team recorded its best round at the Lehigh Invitational on Saturday, shooting a combined 302 to finish in eighth place at Saucon Valley Country Club.
The Johnnies finished with a 36-hole total of 617, at the par-72, 7,091-yard layout.
Sophomore Jack Simon led the way for the Johnnies, signing off on a pair of 74s to finish ninth overall in standings.
"Jack played great over the last two days," Head Coach Mal Galletta said. "He was right in there for the title run but recorded a pair of unfortunate bogeys on the day that set him back. Overall I was very proud of his performance."
Freshman Alex Kyriacou posted a season-best three-under 69 in the final round to move up 43 spots and tie for 12th place with a combined score of 150. The Suffern, N.Y., native's final round effort was highlighted by five birdies and an eagle on the par-five 15th hole.
"I think this was a round in the making," Coach Galletta said. "Alex has been playing some good golf and it really came together today."
Sophomore Tyler Gerbavsits closed with a 79 to finish at 156 and in a tie for 33rd place.
Freshman Gage Wolfle wrapped up the event with an 80 for a combined 163.
Freshmen Ryan Rittberger and Joseph Busiello rounded out scoring for the Red Storm, signing off on an 82 and 80 on the day.
Holy Cross carded a closing round of 291 to finish at 592 and six shots clear of second place Army West Point.
Army West Point's Justin Williamson used a closing round 70 to claim medalist honors, finishing at even-par 141.
The men's golf team returns to action on Tuesday, hosting a quad match with Manhattan, Iona and Hofstra at Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y.
