Gerald Mackedon earns co-medalist honors at the 18-hole quad match
Led by Gerald Mackedon's first individual title of the season, the St. John's men's golf team captured its first team championship of the year on Tuesday at the Red Storm Invitational at Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y.
"It feels great to get our first win of the season," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "The guys have worked very hard over the past few weeks. It was a tough day on the course with the wind and rain, but everyone showed their toughness by grinding it out with their short games. Our momentum should be high heading into this weekend's event with Wagner."
In the 18-hole quad match, Mackedon turned in a 71 on the day to earn co-medalist honors with Samuel Taraian of Manhattan College. The Port Jefferson native's first-place performance was highlighted by four birdies.
Sophomore Jack Simon sat one stroke back of Mackedon with a score of 72. The Sparta, N.J., native fired off a team-high five birdies to sit in a tie for third.
Freshman Alex Kyriacou placed sixth in the standings, signing off on a 75. The rookie was one of just two golfers to record an eagle on the day.
Junior Tyler Gerbavsits and freshman Ryan Rittberger turned in scores of 78 and 79, respectively.
Freshman Gage Wolfle rounded out scoring for the Red Storm with an 83 to finish in a tie for 19th.
The Johnnies will return to action on Oct. 27-28, when they travel to Clifton, N.J. for the Met Intercollegiate.
