The St. John's women's soccer team will look to secure three crucial BIG EAST points when the Johnnies travel to Villanova on Thursday afternoon for a 3 p.m. contest with the Wildcats.
The Red Storm's (4-11-0, 1-5-0 BIG EAST) matchup with Villanova (7-5-3, 3-2-1 BIG EAST) can be viewed on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi. The broadcast can also be accessed on BIG EAST's YouTube channel, Twitter handle and Caffeine channel (www.Caffeine.tv/BEDN).
With six league games in the rearview mirror for all 10 BIG EAST squads, Thursday's contest between St. John's and Villanova will prove critical in the conference standings. The Red Storm cannot lose another contest in order to keep hopes alive to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship. The Wildcats find themselves in a four-team jam in fourth place, meaning if the season ended today, one of the four programs would not make the postseason cut.
The Johnnies are led offensively by redshirt junior Zsani Kajan, who ranks inside the top-10 in the BIG EAST for goals with six this campaign. Five other Johnnies have contributed offensively for the Red Storm this season, as Maia Cabrera, Alex Madden, Isabelle Aviza and Samantha Masur have all found the back of the net.
Freshman Jessica Garziano paces the team in assists this year with four. The Melville, N.Y., native is the first rookie to register four assists in her first season since Lucy Whipp did so in 2015.
The Red Storm will look to defeat Villanova for the seventh-straight campaign on Thursday afternoon. St. John's last win over the Wildcats came on Oct. 18, 2018, in a 3-2 come-from-behind overtime victory. With the Red Storm down 2-0 and 30 minutes remaining on the clock, former St. John's standouts Christina Bellero and Whipp each found the back of the net to send the match into extra time. Bellero netted the game-winning goal just nine minutes into overtime to cement the victory for St. John's.
Villanova enters Sunday's contest with a 7-5-3 record, posting a 3-2-1 mark in conference play to tie for fourth place with three other conference opponents. The Wildcats are coming off of a 3-1 setback to Marquette on Sunday. Prior to its loss to the Golden Eagles, Villanova had picked up back-to-back wins over Seton Hall and DePaul.
Brice McInroy and Chloe O'Neill lead Villanova offensively with 11 points each. McInroy has scored a team-high five goals while O'Neill is the Wildcats' leader in assists with five.
Rebecca Gartner has been Villanova's starter in goal this season, playing over 900 minutes. The keeper is currently boasting a 1.58 goals against average, .738 save percentage, and 45 total saves.
