Red Storm will look to pick up its ninth win in 10 tries on Friday night
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2019) – After improving to 2-0-0 in conference action with a 1-0 win over Butler last Saturday night in Indianapolis, the St. John's men's soccer team will look to stay undefeated in BIG EAST play when it travels to Marquette on Friday night.
The match, which is set to kick-off at 8 p.m. ET, will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Patrick Reed on the call. BEDN can be accessed through the conference's Twitter and YouTube pages in addition to the BEDN channel on Caffeine.
The Red Storm will look to start BIG EAST play 3-0-0 for the first time in a decade and a half. The Johnnies last earned wins in each of their first three conference contests back in 2004, as the Red Storm picked up three shutout victories over West Virginia, No. 23 Seton Hall and Georgetown. That season, St. John's went 6-1-3 in BIG EAST play before falling one win shy of its second consecutive College Cup. The program record for consecutive victories in conference play is 12, as the Red Storm went 8-0-0 in 1992 before rattling off four straight wins to kick off league action in 1993.
8-1-0 marks the program's best record through nine games since 2008, when the Johnnies started the season 7-0-2 with the two draws coming against No. 2 Boston College and No. 3 Notre Dame. That year, St. John's went on to finish 19-3-3 and make its fourth appearance all-time in the College Cup.
A pair of Johnnies found themselves recognized by the BIG EAST on Monday, as Rafael Bustamante was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week while Jan Hoffelner earned a spot on the conference's weekly honor roll. Bustamante, the third different St. John's back to earn BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season, helped the Red Storm surrender just one goal in nearly 200 minutes of action, as the Johnnies fell in double overtime, 1-0, to defending national champion Maryland on Sept. 23 before shutting out Butler, 1-0, on Saturday night in Indianapolis. Hoffelner, who registered a scoreless first half against the Terps, became the first St. John's keeper to play a full 90 minutes this season on Saturday against the Bulldogs. The junior from Frankfurt, Germany, currently leads the team and ranks second in the conference with a 0.40 goals against average. He made one save against Maryland before tallying a season-high three stops in the Red Storm's second straight victory to open conference play.
Tani Oluwaseyi registered the lone goal of the match in the Red Storm's 1-0 win against Butler, a team that had downed then-No. 5 Indiana in its previous contest. Oluwaseyi's 35th minute marker raised his season-long total in that category to four, tied for the team lead with Niko Petridis. Three of the sophomore's four goals have proven to be game-winners. In 2018, Oluwaseyi scored four total goals during a campaign that saw him earn a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
Marquette returns to BIG EAST action on the heels of a lopsided midweek loss, falling to Saint Louis, 6-2, on Tuesday night in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles jumped ahead on a seventh minute goal before allowing five unanswered from the Billikens. That non-conference falter came on the heels of a solid BIG EAST road win on Friday night, as the Golden Eagles scored twice in the final 26 minutes to come back and down Xavier, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles are led offensively by Josh Coan, a senior forward who has found the back of the net five times this season, including once in each of the team's last two contests. Coan ranks 20th nationally in shots per game (3.67) and fifth in shots on goal per game (2.22) through matches played on Tuesday.
Senior forward Connor Alba and freshman forward Christian Marquez have also scored on multiple occasions this year, as both enter the weekend with two goals. Senior midfielder Luka Prpa, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection, scored his first goal of the season against the Billikens on Tuesday.
Jackson Weyman, a redshirt freshman from Evanston, Ill., has played every minute between the pipes for Marquette so far this season. He enters Friday night's match with a 1.49 goals against average, a metric that stood at 0.95 before surrendering a half-dozen Saint Louis tallies on Tuesday.
St. John's will look to turn the tide in a series history that has favored Marquette over the past decade. Since winning the first two matches between the two teams in 2005 and 2008, the Johnnies have seen Marquette go undefeated in their last seven meetings, as the Golden Eagles have turned in a record of 4-0-3 against their conference foes from Queens.
Three of the last six outings featuring St. John's and Marquette have ended in scoreless draws.
Last season, St. John's suffered its most lopsided defeat of the campaign, 4-0, in Milwaukee. Three of those Golden Eagle goals came with the Red Storm playing down a man in the final 25 minutes of the contest.
