St. John’s Begins BIG EAST Home Slate with No. 14 Creighton and Providence

The Red Storm will face the Bluejays on Friday night before taking on the Friars Saturday afternoon
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2019) – After concluding an eight-game road stretch that featured five wins and two victories over then-No. 14 Oregon and Duke, the St. John's volleyball team returns home to take on No. 14 Creighton and Providence this weekend inside Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm (9-6, 1-1 BIG EAST) will first face off against No. 14 Creighton on Friday at 7 p.m. before closing out the week against Providence the following day at 1 p.m.
The Johnnies defeated DePaul to open up league play last weekend, but later suffered a loss to No. 10 Marquette after winning the first set and pushing the second frame into extra points. Of the 15 teams that St. John's has faced this season, 10 appeared in last year's NCAA Tournament and five schools ranked in the top 25.
After recording 12 blocks across the two matches, Ariadni Kathariou earned her first-ever BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week award, while Efrosini Alexakou was named to the weekly honor roll after leading the conference with 4.62 kills per set.
Alexakou put down a game-high 23 kills in the Red Storm's win over the Blue Demons while Kathariou led the team with six blocks. Kathariou added another six blocks and registered five kills against Marquette, as Alexakou notched a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs.
Kathariou currently ranks third in the league with 49 blocks, while Alexakou's 3.98 kills per set sit in second among BIG EAST players.
Erica Di Maulo dished out 76 total assists against DePaul and Marquette. The senior setter ranks fourth all-time with 4,325 helpers and is now just 50 away from passing St. John's great Wioleta Leszczynska. Di Maulo's 128 service aces are also eight shy of the program's all-time record. Karin Palgutova holds the top spot after finishing her career with 135 service aces in 2015.

The Bluejays' 2019 resume includes two four-set wins over then-No. 12 Kentucky and then-No. 15 USC, while all three of the squad's losses this season have come against top 25 teams.
Freshman outside hitter Keeley Davis leads Creighton with 126 kills while senior setter Madelyn Cole's 10.45 assists per set rank first in the BIG EAST. Libero Brittany Witt has a team-high 215 digs this season and sits at second in the conference with 4.89 digs per set.
Providence (5-10, 0-2 BIG EAST) heads into this Saturday's matchup after falling to Georgetown and Villanova this past weekend.
Senior Jenae Alderson currently leads the Friars with 38 blocks this season and ranks third on the team with 103 kills.
The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native also holds the league's highest attack percentage with a minimum of 12 kills in a single match after hitting at a .733 clip during Providence's win in straight sets over Merrimack on September 4.
The Red Storm own a 18-5 all-time record against the Friars with St. John's posting a 5-0 record in its last five matchups with Providence.
