Carolyn Von Werne and Camryn Steele sign National Letters of Intent
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2019) – St. John's Softball Head Coach Bob Guerriero announced the signings of Carolyn Von Werne and Camryn Steele to a National Letter of Intent on Thursday afternoon.
"Carolyn and Camryn will bring high level defensive skills to our team when they come home to Queens in the Fall of 2020," Coach Guerriero said. "Carolyn brings all-around talent at first base and in the outfield with solid hitting and defensive capabilities. Camryn is someone that runners on base should be worried about with how strong her arm is and her ability to track a ball."
Von Werne will head north to Queens from Palm Beach Gardens High School in Florida following her senior year. Through the first three campaigns, the Royal Palm Beach, Fla., native holds a career .384 batting average, including a .408 mark as a freshman in 2017. Von Werne has driven in 75 RBIs and scored 58 runs in 79 contests. She has also reached base safely in 21 straight games.
The 6-foot-1 newcomer was an active member of back-to-back District Championship teams in 2018 and 2019. In her first title game, the versatile first baseman/outfielder fell a home run shy of the cycle with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the dish and a trio of RBIs. Along with her pair of championships, Von Werne also earned Second Team All-State recognition following both seasons. Outside of her success with Palm Beach Gardens, she has had three top 10 finishes with her travel ball club, Lady Gators Jackson, from 2017-18.
Von Werne also excels in academics as an active member in the National Honors Society and the National Technical Honors Society, boasting a 4.0 GPA. The newest Johnnie also played a season for her high school's volleyball team.
Camryn Steele will join the Red Storm alongside Von Werne following her senior season at Venice High School. She has spent the last two seasons with Venice after she transferred from the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) in her sophomore year. Through her three varsity campaigns, the Los Angeles, Calif., native has compiled 95 hits in 60 career games, averaging over 1.5 hits per contest. The career .608 hitter also added 74 runs and 87 RBIs between her two high school squads.
The Red Storm's newest outfielder/utility player will step into her second season as Venice High's captain following a slew of accolades in her junior year. Steele was selected to her second straight California Interscholastic Federation-Los Angeles (CIF LA) All-Western League First Team and All-City Second Team while earning her first All-State nomination.
Aside from her high school teams, Steele played travel ball with So Cal Athletics McNee before competing with the California Raiders Bruder this past season.
"I believe these two young women expect to win every time they take the field and they will complement our returning players very well," Coach Guerriero said.
