BUFFALO, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2019) – The St. John's cross country team battled through snowy and slippery terrain at the NCAA Northeast Regional, held at the Audubon Golf Course on Friday morning.
"Our team ran its best race of the year at the NCAA Regional. Katie Bruno and Stephanie Gerland led the effort while Nicole McCarthy and Claire Cushing posted seasonal bests," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. Jackie Gallagher, after a viscous fall at the start, passed nearly 100 runners to close out our team scoring. Grace Adolphe also posted a personal best for the 6K distance."
2019 NJCAA All-American Bruno posted her best mark of the season, leading the Johnnies to the finish line with a time of 21:29.1. En route to her 105th place finish, the junior out of Tuscon, Ariz., shaved off nearly three minutes from her time of 24:18.9 at the BIG EAST Championship on Nov. 2.
Gerland followed Bruno 14 seconds later in 122nd place, crossing at 21:43.1 to beat out Nora Klinowski of Niagara. The Garden City product also cut nearly two minutes worth of time from her mark at the conference championship.
Senior McCarthy and freshman Cushing were separated by just 3.8 seconds in Buffalo, both posting season-best times at 22:20.1 and 22:23.9, respectively.
Despite Gallagher's fall in the early going, the senior reclaimed her footing in the snow and battled back for her best mark of the season at 23:14.7. The Belle Harbor, N.Y., native also clipped her conference meet score of 25:31.1 by over two minutes.
Out of the 37 teams competing from all across the Northeast Region, the Red Storm closed out the meet in 28th place, scoring 771 points and its highest rank since 2016 when the team finished in 26th. Harvard took home the regional team title, while senior Hannah Reinhardt from Albany captured the individual medal with a time of 19:28.4.
"Our team has now moved up in every championship meet from a year ago and we look to continue that trend next week," Coach Hurt said.
The Red Storm will close out its 2019 season at the ECAC Championships on Nov. 23 at Van Cortlandt Park.
