Red Storm will look to remain perfect at home on the campaign
After defeating ACC foe Wake Forest on Friday evening in Queens, the St. John's women's basketball team will close out its two-game homestand on Monday night, welcoming UMass to the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. showdown.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Ralph Bednarczyk and Sky Lindsay on the call from Queens.
St. John's (3-1) enters Monday's contest on the heels of its highest scoring total of the season, defeating Wake Forest, 82-74, on Friday night. As a team, the Johnnies are averaging the second-highest scoring total in the BIG EAST with 74.8 points per game.
This season, the Red Storm has been led in the early going by Qadashah Hoppie. The junior guard is averaging a team-high 20.0 points per game to rank third in the BIG EAST in scoring. With 23 points against the Demon Deacons, Hoppie logged her third-straight game with at least 20 points. Hoppie became first Johnnie to do so since Danaejah Grant scored 20-plus points in a program record seven-consecutive contests during the 2015-16 season.
Alissa Alston, who registered 20 points in the team's most recent contest with Wake Forest, is one of three Johnnies currently averaging double figures. Leilani Correa, who leads all freshmen in the BIG EAST for scoring, is averaging 11.5 points through four outings.
Tiana England has continued to play a key component in the Red Storm's early success. The redshirt junior has dished out a league-best 6.5 assists per game to sit 15th in the nation. The Stamford, Conn., native is also averaging 3.8 steals per outing, for the second best in the conference and 14th in the NCAA.
The Red Storm will look to remain perfect on the year at home, as the Johnnies have won both of their early contests inside Carnesecca Arena this season. In those two victories, the Red Storm averaged 79.0 points per game on a 45 percent shooting from the floor. St. John's has outscored its opponents by an average 20.0 points per outing in games contested at Carnesecca Arena.
UMass comes to Queens with a record of 3-2. The Minutewomen are riding a three-game winning streak after dropping their first two contests of the season.
Hailey Leidel, a 5-foot-11 wing from Brownstown, Mich., leads the team in scoring through five games with 15.0 points per contest. Leidel is one of three players boasting double figures for UMass this year, as Destine Philoxy and Paige McCormick are averaging 14.0 and 10.0 points per game, respectively.
Monday will mark the 13th all-time meeting between St. John's and UMass, with the Johnnies holding a, 9-3, advantage. Behind a 17-point performance from former St. John's standout Da'Shena Stevens, the Red Storm defeated UMass, 82-52, in two team's last showdown on Nov. 18, 2009.
