Qadashah Hoppie paced the way for the Red Storm with 22 points
Behind another stellar offensive performance, the St. John's women's basketball team took down UMass, 82-71, on Monday evening to remain undefeated this season inside Carnesecca Arena.
As a team, St. John's shot 53 percent from the floor, knocking down 11 of its 24 tries from beyond the arc. The Johnnies also converted on 13 of their 15 attempts from the charity stripe to finish with 82 points for the second-straight game.
Qadashah Hoppie paced the way offensively for the Red Storm with 22 points against the Minutewomen. The junior guard has eclipsed the 20-point mark in four-consecutive outings. Hoppie also brought down three rebounds along with a trio of steals on the night.
Tiana England put forth another consistent effort for the Red Storm. The redshirt junior drained six of her 10 tries from the field to finish with 15 points. The Stamford, Conn., native came just two assists shy of a double-double, dishing out a team-high eight dimes against UMass to go along with three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
Freshmen Emma Nolan and Leilani Correa joined Hoppie and England in double figures. In her second career start for the Red Storm, Nolan recorded her first double-digit performance, finishing with 12 points on the evening. The rookie forward was nearly perfect from the floor, connecting on three of her four attempts including two of three tries from distance. Correa's 11 points against UMass marked the fourth time this year that she has finished with over 10 points in a single contest.
Despite recording just six points, Kadaja Bailey dominated the glass, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds to go along with three steals.
The two programs traded blows in early going of the contest until the Johnnies unleashed a 13-0 run to take a commanding 19-5 lead with just under six minutes to play in the opening stanza. UMass began to chip away at the Red Storm's advantage, pulling the score within eight, 25-17, after 10 minutes of action.
The Johnnies fired off seven unanswered points to start the second frame, regaining their double-digit lead, 37-17. UMass responded with a 7-0 run of their own to inch back within eight, 32-24, with a little over six minutes to play in the half.
It was a back-and-forth battle down the stretch of the second quarter, but the Red Storm never lost sight of the lead, holding on to a 44-37 edge after 20 minutes of action.
At the break, England led the way for the Red Storm in scoring with 13 points, knocking down eight of those in the second quarter alone.
Coming out of the locker room, UMass scored the opening basket to get within five, 44-39. Hoppie responded with an 8-0 run of her own, pulling up in the paint before draining back-to-back threes to give St. John's a 13-point lead, 52-39. The Minutewomen continued to battle the Johnnies over the remainder of the third frame but the Red Storm stood strong to lead, 65-51, heading into the final quarter.
Correa kicked off the scoring in the final stanza with a pull up jumper to build the Johnnies' lead up to 16, 67-51, their largest of the night. The Minutewomen managed to trim their deficit to eight but could not get any close as the Red Storm cemented the victory.
The Johnnies will return to action this weekend with a trip to Las Vegas for the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up. The Red Storm will open up against IUPUI on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The following day, the Johnnies will square off against either UNLV or Elon.
