Cavaliers score three first-half goals in 3-0 victory
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Nov. 30, 2019) – The No. 16 St. John's men's soccer team saw its NCAA Tournament run come to an end in the Third Round on Saturday night, as the Red Storm fell to No. 1 Virginia, 3-0, at Klockner Stadium.
The Red Storm's round-of-16 berth marked the 12th such appearance in the rich history of St. John's Men's Soccer. St. John's earned a bid to the tournament for the 21st time in the past 28 seasons. Included in those 21 appearances are four College Cups and the 1996 national championship.
The Johnnies finished the season with a record of 14-5-1, tied for the team's highest win total since the College Cup campaign of 2008. All five of the Red Storm's losses came to teams that advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
UVA opened the scoring in just the third minute, as a Cavaliers' corner kick was headed from the near post to the far post, where it was sent home by Andreas Ueland for his first of two goals on the night.
The Red Storm recorded its first scoring chance in the 12th minute, as Skage Simonsen split a pair of defenders on the right side before sending a cross into the box for Jared Juleau. The freshman headed the ball just over the bar, preserving the 1-0 lead for Virginia.
UVA scored again off a corner kick in the 15th minute, as Ueland charged toward the cage and, despite creating ample contact with St. John's keeper Jan Hoffelner, knocked it into the net and put the Cavaliers ahead 2-0.
Virginia scored for the final time in the half with nine minutes to go, as Joe Bell converted on a penalty kick to give the Cavaliers the 3-0 lead with which they would end the game.
Luka Gavran made two saves for St. John's in a scoreless second half.
