QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2019) – St. John's track & field assistant coach Aliann Pompey has been named the President of the Panam Sports Athletes' Commission, it was announced by the organization on Tuesday.
"I am thrilled and honored by the confidence of my fellow commissioners to elect me as President," Coach Pompey said. "I am preceding Alexandra Orlando (CAN) and Carlos Santiago (PUR), who have done an amazing job in leading this commission. I have huge shoes to fill and tremendous support to be able to do so. I look forward to what I'm sure will be a collaborative effort and group success."
The Guyana native was elected at the Dec. 6 meeting to become the active voice for more than 6,600 athletes across 41 countries that compete in the Pan American Games. Pompey will guide an executive staff of seven through the completion of her term following the 2023 Games slated to be held in Santiago, Chile.
"We are very proud of Coach Pompey on her appointment as the next President of the Panam Sports Athletes' Commission," said St. John's Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "Aliann's selection to this position by her peers in addition to all the support she received from the thousands of athletes who competed in the Pan American Games is a testament to how well-respected she is on the international level. Aliann has consistently showcased a deep commitment to excellence and she has always placed an emphasis on the well-being of athletes, so I am confident she will make a positive impact in this leadership role."
Pompey has served as a standing member of the Athletes' Commission since 2015. The four-time Olympian has been active in the international circuit since her running days, also serving on the National Sports Commission for Guyana. She has also been an active member of the Metropolitan Conference in New York, serving as the league's President.
Pompey will head to her first executive meeting on Dec. 15 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., following the inaugural Panam Awards on Friday, Dec. 13.
