Guerriero will look to build upon his team’s 2019 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship
QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 18, 2019) – Looking to claim its second straight BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, the St. John's softball team will face a loaded 53-game slate in 2020.
At the helm of the program, second-year Head Coach Bob Guerriero will look to build upon impressive success from a year ago, as his team earned several conference accolades and recognition as the conference's top coaching staff.
Among the 32 teams on tap, the Red Storm's highly-touted schedule features nine squads who ranked inside the NCAA's top 100 for RPI at season's end, seven that recorded 30 wins or more and four that had reached the NCAA Tournament, including reigning National Champion UCLA.
Guerriero's squad will kick off its season with a 23-game road trip, heading to Florida, Texas and California from February through the beginning of March before making its home debut.
St. John's will open its 2020 campaign in Orlando at UCF's Black and Gold Tournament, squaring off against Clemson in the program's season opener on Feb. 7. The Tigers are one of just four programs this season that the Red Storm has not faced in its 39-year history. The Johnnies will then match up with Power Five foes in back-to-back, facing Indiana and Duke on Feb. 8 before wrapping up opening weekend against Clemson and host school UCF on Feb. 9.
Following their slate in the Sunshine State, the Johnnies will head to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational. St. John's will kick off the five-game swing against Binghamton on Feb. 14 followed by its first meeting with the Aggies in nearly 20 years. On Feb. 15, the Johnnies will face Lamar for the first-time in program history before taking on Binghamton that evening. St. John's will close out the invitational by closing out against Texas A&M the following day.
After the five contests in Aggieland, St. John's will continue its Texas swing in Beaumont at the Lamar University Tournament, beginning on Feb. 21. The Red Storm will face the Cardinals on all three days and are slated to play Northern Colorado on Feb. 21 and Feb. 22.
Following its 10-game stint in the Lone Star State, the Red Storm will hit the West Coast for its spring break trip, featuring its toughest test of non-conference play. St. John's will open its first of seven games in California against Long Beach State on Feb. 28 before taking on San Diego that evening in the San Diego Classic. The following day, the Johnnies will play Mountain West regular season runner-up San Jose State and host school San Diego State before concluding its weekend against Mount St. Mary's (Md.).
St. John's will travel north from America's Finest City to the City of Angels for a pair of premier showdowns on March 3. The Johnnies will take on defending Big Ten Champion Michigan, who has not lost a regular season contest since its 2-1 defeat against Ohio State on April 13. The Wolverines were knocked out of the 2019 NCAA Regionals after falling to James Madison twice.
Following its matchup with Michigan, St. John's will look to take down 2019 NCAA Champion UCLA under the lights of Easton Stadium in the final game of its spring break trip. The Pac-10 Co-Champion Bruins finished up their 2019 campaign at 56-6 while making an improbable 10-1 run in the NCAA Tournament to pick up the program's 13th national title.
The Johnnies will return to the Tri-State Area to close out their 23-game road trip with a matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck on March 11.
After five weeks away to open the season, the Red Storm will return to Queens on March 13-15 for the sixth-annual St. John's Invitational. The Johnnies will throw down with Hofstra in their home opener, followed by a meeting with Sacred Heart, over whom the Red Storm holds a 9-1 series lead.
St. John's will welcome Holy Cross to Red Storm Field for the second-straight season on March 14, squaring off with the Crusaders on March 14 before renewing its rivalry with Connecticut to conclude the invitational on Sunday.
St. John's will hit the road following its short homestand, kicking off conference play with a trip to Providence on March 20-22. The Red Storm took the season series from the Friars in 2019, winning the final game, 6-5, on a walk-off single by Laura Delgado.
The Johnnies return home for a midweek matchup with the new-look LIU Sharks on March 25 before heading to The City of Brotherly Love for a showdown with BIG EAST Tournament runner-up Villanova on March 27-29. The Red Storm took down the Wildcats in the regular season series, 2-1, before falling to Villanova in the conference tournament semifinal.
Following its trip to the Keystone State, Coach Guerriero's squad will head to Riverdale on March 31 to close out the month at Manhattan.

The Johnnies will take a quick trip to Stony Brook on April 7, before the 2019 BIG EAST Regular Season Champs look to sweep Creighton for the second-straight season when the Bluejays visit on Easter weekend. St. John's will take on Creighton in a doubleheader on April 9 before closing out the series with a single game on April 11.
After spending Easter at home, the Red Storm will head to The Windy City for a showdown with defending BIG EAST Champion DePaul on April 17-19. The Blue Demons were the only conference team to split with the Johnnies in 2019 after the final game of the series was rained out.
The Red Storm will take on Atlantic 10 Champion Fordham to open a five-game home stretch on April 22. The Rams took home their seventh consecutive conference championship after rain washed out the championship game, giving the title to Fordham, the higher seed.

St. John's will close out its home slate on April 29 with a showdown against Iona before a trip to the nation's capital for its season finale against Georgetown on May 3-5.
The BIG EAST Softball Championship will once again return to the Ballpark at Rosemont beginning on May 8. The Johnnies will look to claim their second conference crown in six years at the park, which plays host to the Chicago Bandits of National Pro Fastpitch.
