BOCA RATON, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2019) – The St. John's softball team closed out its opening weekend with a 4-3 victory over Virginia at the FAU "First Pitch" Classic Sunday morning.
"I thought we played hard, overcame a few miscues and came up with some timely hitting and clutch pitching," Head Coach Bob Guerriero said.
Amelia Ditolvo led the way for the Red Storm, registering a 2-for-2 outing with an RBI and a run. The Bordentown, N.J., native leads the Johnnies with four RBIs through five games. Right-hander Madison Morris tossed a complete game in her first win of the season after picking up a no-decision in her career-high 15-strikeout performance against Florida Atlantic Friday evening.
Virginia (0-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Haley Busby led off with a triple to right-center, followed by a two-run shot to left by starting pitcher Erika Osherow. Morris recovered from the early home run by retiring the next six batters in order.
St. John's (2-3) countered the Cavaliers with a two-spot of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Ditolvo ignited the Red Storm's offense with a lead-off triple. After a Gretchen Bowie walk, the sophomore shortstop crossed the plate for the Johnnies' first run of the game on a double steal. Marissa Rizzi continued her hot start with an RBI single past the outstretched second baseman, Abagail Barber, tying the game at two.
The junior first baseman leads the Red Storm through five games with a .462 batting average and six hits.
Virginia threatened with runners in the third frame, but was quickly denied by the Johnnies' defense. Ditolvo dived to her left to rob a single up the middle and stepped on second for the first out. After Osherow flew out to center, catcher Kaitlin Mattera caught Busby stealing second to end the inning.
After a pair of scoreless innings, St. John's took its first lead of the game, 3-2, in the fifth inning on a Ditolvo single to right, driving in Meisha Murray from second.
The Cavaliers responded in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to center field, knotting the game at three. In the bottom half, Peyton Cody scored the game-winning run on an error by Virginia's Barber, giving St. John's its 4-3 advantage.
The Red Storm continues its road trip next weekend as they head to the Gamecock Invitational hosted by South Carolina on Feb. 15.
