Red Storm and Blue Demons will meet at 12 p.m. ET on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will kick off a two-game road swing to end the 2018-19 regular season on Sunday, squaring off with DePaul at 12 p.m. ET in Chicago.
The contest will be broadcast live on FS1 with Lisa Byington and Dickey Simpkins on the call from Wintrust Arena. The game will also be carried on 970 AM WNYM in the New York Metropolitan Area, as John Minko and Tarik Turner will deliver the action live from The Windy City.
St. John's (20-9, 8-8 BIG EAST) enters its final road trip of the regular season looking to avenge a loss in its home finale to Xavier at Carnesecca Arena. Through games played on Thursday, the Johnnies are currently tied for third place in the BIG EAST standings with Xavier, who has now won five in a row. Either Seton Hall or Georgetown will pull into a three-way tie for third by the time St. John's and DePaul tip off, as the Pirates and the Hoyas, both of whom are 7-8 in league play, will meet on Saturday night in Washington. The Musketeers and the Red Storm will meet in their regular season finale on March 9 at Cintas Center in Cincinnati.
Before that rematch with Xavier, St. John's will look to avenge its lone other BIG EAST loss at Carnesecca Arena when the team pays a visit to the Blue Demons (13-13, 5-10 BIG EAST). Playing without the services of Shamorie Ponds on Jan. 12, the Johnnies dropped a 79-71 decision to DePaul in a contest that saw the Red Storm make just five 3-pointers and force only three steals, both of which rank as the team's second lowest output in each category this season. Both of the Red Storm's home losses in February came without the aid of Mustapha Heron, the team's second leading scorer at 15.4 points per outing, who sat out for the third time in the team's last six games due to a sore right knee. Overall, the Johnnies are 1-3 this season in contests where either Ponds or Heron fail to suit up.
LJ Figueroa led the way offensively for St. John's on Thursday night, tallying 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including a 9-for-11 showing from inside the three-point arc. The sophomore from Lawrence, Mass., who has scored 20 or more in two of his last four outings, also grabbed five boards and dished out four assists. On the season, Figueroa leads the team in field goal percentage at 51.1 percent and ranks second on the squad in three-point success rate at 37.7 percent.
Shamorie Ponds and Marvin Clark II also finished the evening in double figures for St. John's, posting 13 and 11, points respectively. Ponds (1,766) moved into seventh place on the program's all-time scoring list, passing fellow Brooklyn native George Johnson, who scored 1,763 points and grabbed a school record 1,240 boards between 1974 and 1978. Next up on the program's all-time scoring list in sixth place is Zendon Hamilton, who netted 1,810 points from 1994-98.
St. John's will get its second chance at win no. 21 of the season on Sunday, looking to match the highest total in program history since the 1999-2000 team won 25 games, won a BIG EAST title and made an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Each of the last two St. John's teams to go dancing in 2010-11 and 2014-15 finished the season with 21 wins.
After starting BIG EAST play with a record of 3-3 through their first six games, the Blue Demons have dropped seven of their last nine and have lost four in a row heading into Sunday's meeting with the Red Storm. All four of those losses have come by nine points or more.
Four Blue Demons are averaging double figures on the season, led by Max Strus at 17.6 points per game.
The Red Storm will have to do well to keep DePaul off the boards, as the Blue Demons lead the BIG EAST in rebounding margin at +5.3. The last time the two teams met in Queens, Strus and Paul Reed each tallied a double-double while Femi Olujobi recorded 27 points and eight rebounds.
