St. John’s Travels to Iona on Wednesday

The Red Storm is 19-5 all-time against the Gaels
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 23, 2019) – Winners in eight of its last nine games, the St. John's softball team will head to New Rochelle for a matchup with Iona on Wednesday, beginning at 3 p.m. The midweek contest will have live stats available on ICGaels.com.
The Johnnies enter Wednesday's game with a 23-17 record following a split doubleheader with DePaul last week. St. John's took game one from the Blue Demons, 5-1, before falling in the second contest, 5-4.
Kaitlyn Lologo captured her first career Weekly Honor Roll selection after a successful weekend against DePaul. Following a one hit and one run performance in game one, the Irvine, Calif., native knocked a two-run shot over the fence in the fifth before taking a DePaul's ace Natalie Halvorson deep for the second time in the seventh on a solo home run.
Peyton Cody earned a spot on the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 25 List, ranking among the top rookies in the NCAA. She became just the second Johnnie to be selected to the top 25 list, joining Krystal Puga in 2015. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native has led the Red Storm with a .409 batting average, 45 hits, 10 doubles and 39 RBIs in 38 appearances. She has also scored 30 runs, hit six homers and is a perfect 4-for-4 in steal attempts. Cody has recorded six hits and 18 RBIs with the bases loaded, including the team's first grand slam of the season on April 10.
The Red Storm is 19-5 against the Gaels since the teams' first meeting in 1981, outscoring the MAAC rival, 129-54, in 24 contests. The Johnnies have shut out Iona five times since the teams' first meeting.
Iona enters the midweek contest with a 14-20 record and sits in third in the MAAC standings at 9-3. The Gaels have won six of their last seven matches, scoring a combined 29 runs over the stretch.
Jessica Chilcott leads the charge offensively for Iona, with a slash line of .305/.448/.376. She has recorded 32 hits, 10 of them being doubles, and has scored 17 times in 34 appearances this season. Jasmine Temple is also batting over .300 for the Gaels and is leading the team with 22 RBIs.
Kara Zazzaro leads the Iona pitching staff, holding an 8-8 record with 107 strikeouts in 116.1 innings of work. The Gaels' freshman has posted a 1.44 ERA with 16 complete games and holding her opponents to a .193 batting average. Her earned run average is ranked 26th in the nation.
As a team, Iona's offense is averaging 3.24 runs per game while its pitching staff holds its opponents to a second-best .234 batting average in the MAAC.
In last season's contest, St. John's Marissa Rizzi was one of three Johnnies with more than one hit, recording three base knocks, two runs and an RBI in the Red Storm's 8-2 victory in 2018. Gretchen Bowie also crossed the plate twice against the Gaels.
