Two Johnnies have earned conference accolades in the same week for the sixth time this season
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 29, 2019) – After leading the St. John's to a series victory over BIG EAST foe Villanova, Gretchen Bowie was named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Marissa Rizzi was tabbed to the Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the league office on Monday.
This marks the sixth time this season a Johnnies' duo has been named to conference honors in the same week. The Red Storm has accumulated 17 BIG EAST accolades in 2019, the most by any team in the league.
Bowie put forth her best effort of the season against Villanova, recording a team-high nine RBIs and five runs scored. At the dish, the junior posted a .667 batting average with 1.444 slugging percentage and six hits, two of which were three-run home runs.
In game one, her game-winning three-run blast lifted the Red Storm, 8-3, over the Wildcats. Following the Johnnies victory, the Sparta, N.J., native knocked in two more runs to increase her total to five in Saturday's doubleheader. In the rubber match, the Johnnies' third baseman was perfect at the dish, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored while falling a triple shy of the cycle.
Rizzi broke her cold streak with a stellar weekend at the dish. She posted a team-leading seven hits over the three-game stretch, five of which went for extra bases. Her spotlight performance came in game three on Sunday, recording a career-high four hits and five RBIs while also missing a triple to complete the cycle. The Manorville, N.Y., native belted a three-run double and a two-run homer to storm back and take the lead in St. John's 12-6 win over against Villanova.
The Red Storm clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Softball Championship and will look to secure the No. 1 seed this weekend at Butler. The Johnnies currently sit in first place with a 13-3 conference record.
Before St. John's takes on the Bulldogs, the team will venture to the Bronx for a Wednesday contest with Fordham. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
