Four St. John’s Programs Honored with BIG EAST Academic Excellence Award

Baseball, lacrosse, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs recognized by the conference
Four St. John's programs have been recognized by the BIG EAST with 2018-19 Team Academic Excellence Awards, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
Baseball, lacrosse, women's golf and women's soccer were each presented with the honor after having the highest GPA in the conference for their respective sports.
Among the 22 teams, St. John's tied Butler with a conference-most four recipients. The women's soccer program was recognized with the highest GPA among all sports in the BIG EAST during the 2018-19 academic season.
For the fourth-consecutive year, the women's soccer squad was honored by the league boasting a conference-best 3.79 GPA. The Johnnies received a slew of accolades following the 2018 campaign, as three individuals earned conference honors for their play on the pitch. St. John's leading scorer Zsani Kajan earned a spot on All-BIG EAST First Team, while Christina Bellero and Claudia Cagnina received a nod to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Recent graduate Mecara Bruce was recognized for her efforts both on and off the field, as she was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Women's Soccer Second Team.
Wednesday's announcement marks the sixth conference award for the baseball program, as the team posted a 3.44 GPA. The Johnnies went 31-23 in their most recent season, marking the 23rd time in 24 years that the Red Storm has registered a winning season under the direction of Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer. The winningest program in BIG EAST history also logged its 16th consecutive conference tournament appearance. At the conclusion of the regular season, St. John's saw four of its players named to the league's top squad, as Mike Antico, Gavin Hollowell, Joe LaSorsa and Wyatt Mascarella all earned spots on the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The lacrosse program continues to display its tradition of excellence in the classroom with the squad's sixth BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence award in the past eight seasons. As a team, the Red Storm posted a 3.43 cumulative GPA. Earlier this year, junior faceoff specialist Erik Suh was named one of 10 semifinalists for the prestigious Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Athlete of the Year award. In addition to the program's success in the classroom, attackman Joe Madsen, midfielder Mike Madsen, and defenseman Aidan Marron all received BIG EAST Second Team honors.
The St. John's women's golf team posted a cumulative GPA of 3.70 to receive the accolade. The Johnnies also earned a spot on the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Top-25 All-Scholar Team GPA list last month. Alejandra Sanchez, Andrea Sanchez and Sofie Huseby were all named to the WGCA All-American Scholar Team. Alongside the program's academic accomplishments, the Johnnies finished inside the top-five in six events last season. Following the regular campaign, Jessie Kweon was named the league's top rookie.
