The Red Storm heads to the USTA National Tennis Center on Friday to host its first home contest of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2020) – After suffering a tough loss in the opening match of the year at Yale last Saturday, the St. John's women's tennis team returns to the Big Apple on Friday to host Fairfield for its first home match of the 2020 season.
Friday's meeting with Fairfield marks the fifth-consecutive season the Red Storm will commence its home schedule with the Stags.
Since the 2013-14 campaign, the Johnnies have swept the Stags in four of their five previous meetings. Last season, Head Coach Lauren Leo's squad defeated Fairfield, 5-2, at the USTA National Tennis Center, behind stellar performances in singles play by Jessica Livianu, Najah Dawson and Oceane Garibal.
The Stags put together a solid fall campaign, going 2-1 in October with 7-0 sweeps over conference foe Rider and Sacred Heart. Leading Fairfield this season are sophomores Amanda Nowak and Paulina Bakaite, who both secured easy victories in Fairfield's two fall victories.
The Red Storm is coming off a road loss to a talented Yale squad that will compete for an Ivy League title this season.
In doubles action, Yale earned the first point of the afternoon after locking comfortable victories in all three of their bouts. Yale's Samantha Shrivastava and Caroline Dunleavy defeated Dawson and Willa Bay Breunich, 6-1, on the No. 3 court, while both the duos of Livianu/Milka Genkova and Garibal/Camila Ordonez fell in the No. 1 and No. 2 contests, 6-3.
Yale won singles matches at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 slots to clinch the victory over the Johnnies.
Livianu secured the lone win in singles play for the Red Storm on the No. 1 court, fending off Samantha Martinelli's, 7-5, 6-2.
Following Friday's bout with Fairfield, the Johnnies will host Morgan State for another home match at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
