A victory on Saturday night will earn the Johnnies their second-consecutive home triumph
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2020) – After capturing its first win of the 2020 campaign over Fairfield this past weekend, the St. John's women's tennis team returns to the court Saturday night to square off with Morgan State at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., at 6:30 p.m. ET.
In its first home match of the spring season, Head Coach Lauren Leo's squad soundly defeated Fairfield, 6 -1, at the USTA National Tennis Center last Friday. The Red Storm's win over the Stags marked the sixth-consecutive season that St. John's team commenced its home schedule with a win over the MAAC opponent.
Najah Dawson and Oceane Garibal opened the doubles round with a 6-0 sweep over Fairfield's Emily Lombardi and Aina March in the No. 2 match. Jessica Livianu and Milka Genkova secured the first point of the afternoon for the Johnnies as they knocked off Amanda Nowak and Diana Prinos on the No. 1 court, 6-3. Kajsa Stegrell earned her first triumph of the season as she paired up with freshman Camila Ordonez to bounce Francesca Karman and Sophia Prinos in the No. 3 doubles slot, 6-3.
Livianu took care of her No. 1 singles bout against Fairfield's Amanda Nowak, 6-0, 6-1, to give her side a 2-0 advantage. Garibal and Genkova followed with straight-set victories in the No. 3 and 2 contests, respectively, defeating Aina March (6-1, 6-4) and Diana Prinos (6-2, 6-2).
Dawson picked up her first singles win of the season as the Brooklyn, N.Y., native toppled Jessica Pil in the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-1. Ordonez secured the Red Storm's sixth and final point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 5 slot over Sophia Prinos.
The Johnnies have amassed six total singles victories to start the spring season. Two of those wins have come from Livianu who has yet to relinquish a set. Dawson, Garibal, Genkova, and Ordonez have each split their two decisions, all gaining their first singles victory of the season in against Fairfield.
Saturday's contest will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Morgan State comes into Saturday's matchup with one win in three total matches. The Lady Bears tennis team opened 2020 with a dominating 4-0 non-conference win over visiting Saint Francis-Pa., on Jan. 20. Asmara Rose leads Morgan State with two wins on the season, including a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over St. Francis-Pa.'s Lucia Seigford in the No. 2 slot.
Following Saturday night's bout with the Lady Bears, the Red Storm will travel to Syracuse, N.Y., on Friday, Feb. 7, to battle former BIG EAST rival Syracuse at 2 p.m. The Johnnies will then return to Queens to host state foes, Siena and Wagner, for a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Queens College Tennis Center.
