QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2020) – The St. John's track & field and cross country programs are set to host the eighth annual Olympic Day, which will be held virtually for the first time, on Sunday, Oct. 18.
This year's event will honor all-time greats Peter Close, Patrick Jarrett, Ian Roberts and the Red Storm's 1980 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championship team. USA Olympic team managers Rich Torellas and Marsha Henry Seagrave will also speak about their experiences overseeing Team USA.
"I am looking forward to our eighth annual Olympic Day where we celebrate our extraordinary Olympic history and highlight the great tradition of our program," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "This year's honorees span 60 years from Pete Close in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome to Marsha Henry Seagrave in 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. It will be a great afternoon bringing together generations of St. John's track & field alumni, family and friends to share the great success of the program."
Close was selected as an All-American at St. John's in 1959 and went on to run in the 1,500 meters at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Roberts became an All-American and BIG EAST conference champion in the 800 meters during his time in Queens. He went on to participate in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, representing his native country of Guyana. Jarrett also took part in the 2000 Summer Olympics as a sprinter for the Jamaica national team. In 1999, Jarrett became the Jamaican 100-meter champion at the 1999 Word Championships in Athletics.
Since 1952, 17 Johnnies have represented their respective countries in 14 Olympic Games. St. John's alumni have not missed an Olympic Games since 1984 and will have representation in nine straight Games when Marsha (Henry) Seagrave travels to Tokyo in 2021, serving as the Head Manager of the United States National Team.
