The St. John’s track & field and cross country teams closed out an eventful fall semester on Friday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 27 2020) – The St. John's track & field and cross country teams wrapped up their fall training last Friday, capping off an eventful semester for the Red Storm.
The Johnnies held a pair of time trails during practice at DaSilva Memorial Field this fall. Several athletes posted personal best marks in their respective events, including senior Leah Anderson. The sprinter posted a time of 23.58 in the 200-meter dash in the first trial of the semester, passing her outdoor personal record of 23.69 that she set at the Sam Howell Invitational during the 2019 outdoor season. Anderson took home three gold medals in the 200 meters, 400 meters and as a member of the Red Storm's 4x400-meter relay squad at the 2020 BIG EAST Indoor Championships in March. St. John's 2020 outdoor campaign was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I am very excited about how our fall training results have turned out," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Our ladies have worked hard for the past 11 weeks in their event areas and in the weight room. They have shown great improvements and achieved personal record times or near personal best marks as they head home for the semester. They also continued their great work in community service and once again posted a perfect 1,000 in APR scores, ranking among the top ten in the nation."
The Red Storm took part in several community service opportunities this semester, including hosting virtual workouts with the Achilles Track Club, sending holiday cards to seniors and military members, and leading the program's Teams-for-Teams Challenge.
Juniors Samantha Morillo and Amanda Belgrave were also named to the St. John's Athletics Council on Community, Cultural and Social Justice, helping develop the Red Storm's Solidarity Week initiative and the school's Accept No Hate movement. The concepts were formed in an effort to help advance the University's commitment to anti-racism, social justice and equality.
The Johnnies will resume practice following winter break on Jan. 15.
