Tip-off between the Red Storm and Friars scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will take the court at Carnesecca Arena for the first time in more than a month when it welcomes Providence to campus for an 8:30 p.m. showdown on Wednesday.
The game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network with announcers Andrew Catalon, Steve Lappas and sideline reporter Jon Rothstein on the call from Queens. An audio broadcast from the IMG-Learfield College Red Storm Sports Network will be carried on 570 AM WMCA, TuneIn and Sirius XM. The voice of the Johnnies, John Minko, and Brandon Tierney will narrate the action courtside from Carnesecca Arena.
Limited tickets for the contest, the second-to-last of the season at Carnesecca Arena, are still available by visiting RedStormTix.com or calling 1-888-GO-STORM.
The Red Storm will kick off its two-game homestand on the heels of a 12-point loss at then-No. 21/22 Creighton on Saturday night. Prior to falling in Omaha, the Johnnies dropped a pair of games at Madison Square Garden, coming up short against Georgetown and then-No. 8/10 Villanova at "The World's Most Famous Arena." Villanova and Creighton are two of five BIG EAST teams that find themselves ranked inside the Associated Press Top 25 poll this week, the highest total for any conference in all of Division I. All five of those ranked teams also occupy spots in the top 25 of the NET while all 10 BIG EAST squads currently sit at 76 or higher in the sorting metric used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.
Sophomore forward Marcellus Earlington had a night to remember against Creighton, posting career highs in both points (25) and rebounds (10) for his first collegiate double-double. The Stony Point, N.Y., native connected on 10 of his 17 field goal attempts, including a 3-for-4 showing from beyond the three-point arc. Coming into the Creighton game, Earlington had gone just 3-for-21 from beyond the arc in 23 appearances on the season.
Another underclassman nearly recorded a double-double in Omaha, as freshman Julian Champagnie finished with nine points and eight boards. A double-double would have been the Brooklyn native's second in as many tries, as he posted 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds against Georgetown on Feb. 2. The Bishop Loughlin product's increase in production has coincided with his return to the starting lineup; Champagnie started the first 16 games of the year before coming off the bench in the next six. St. John's is 11-7 this season in contests when Champagnie appears in the starting lineup.
As a team, the Red Storm connected on 11 of their 31 chances from beyond the arc on Saturday, tied for the team's second-highest total of the season in that category and good enough for the third highest single-game percentage of BIG EAST play.
While the Red Storm shot better than its season average on Saturday, the Bluejays had difficulty missing. Creighton shot 60.3 percent from the floor (35-of-58), the highest-single game percentage for a St. John's opponent by more than 12 percentage points. Before Saturday, DePaul's 48.0 percent effort on Jan. 11 set the high-water mark for a Red Storm foe. The Bluejays converted on 13 of their 28 chances from downtown, against setting opponent single-game highs in terms of both makes and percentage. A key part of Creighton's success on the offensive end resulted from the inability of the Red Storm to force turnovers at its normal rate. Entering the contest, St. John's ranked fourth nationally averaging 10.4 steals per game and had recorded 10 or more thefts in a game 15 times; on Saturday, the Red Storm managed to record just one steal against the Bluejays.
The Red Storm will look to avenge a 63-58 loss to the Friars at Dunkin' Donuts Center on Jan. 15. The Johnnies led near the midway mark of the second half and pulled back within two on a pair of occasions in the final two minutes of play, but the veteran Friars managed to hold off the St. John's push. Four different Johnnies finished in double figures in their last meeting with Providence, led by 12 points from Figueroa. The junior wing also recorded nine rebounds and five steals in that outing.
Providence enters the contest with a 6-5 mark in BIG EAST play and a 13-11 record overall. Since defeating the Johnnies last month, the Friars are 2-4 with five of those six games coming against ranked foes. Both of Providence's wins were over top 25 teams, as the Friars took down Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse and Creighton at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Senior guard Alpha Diallo, a New York native, leads Providence in both scoring and rebounding this season, posting 12.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per appearance. Two other Friars are currently averaging double figures, as David Duke pours in 12.5 per contest and Nate Watson adds 10.1 per contest. Duke also leads the Friars in assists with 3.5 per game.
The Red Storm will look to snap a six-game losing streak against Providence dating back to January of 2017. The Johnnies last win at home against the Friars came on Jan. 31, 2015, a 75-66 victory at Madison Square Garden led by 20 points, seven rebound and five assists from Sir'Dominic Pointer.
After hosting the Friars, St. John's will welcome Xavier to Madison Square Garden for a 6:30 p.m. tilt on Feb. 17, President's Day.
