Mike Madsen’s 13 goals through three games leads the BIG EAST
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2020) – St. John's lacrosse senior Mike Madsen has been named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week in the conference's second weekly awards of 2020 following two career-best performances in the Red Storm's 13-12 overtime defeat at Stony Brook and 13-11 triumph over Hartford in Saturday's home opener.
The Locust Valley, N.Y. native has been on a tear in the first three games of his final collegiate season, firing a BIG EAST-high 13 goals through Saturday. Madsen's 14 shots per game and three man-up goals rank atop the conference while his 13 points rank second in the BIG EAST.
In Tuesday night's overtime loss at Stony Brook, the senior scored five goals which eclipsed his previous career-high set on March 23 of last season in a 15-13 win over UMass Lowell. Four of five of Madsen's goals came in the second half, including the game-tying tally with 2:08 remaining in the fourth period.
Madsen matched his new career-high on Saturday, leading the Red Storm to its first win of the season over Hartford with his five goals. The Locust Valley, N.Y., native scored two of his five tallies in the fourth quarter to catapult the Johnnies over the Hawks, 13-11.
The Red Storm return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 as St. John's will venture to Brookville, N.Y., to square off with LIU at Bethpage Stadium at 1 p.m. ET.
